Well, now of the three MAC schools that play D1 men’s hockey, we are the only one without a Natty. So there’s that.

Celebrating as a conference member when Miami is #62 out of 63 teams is like Purdue or Vanderbilt pounding their chest when Ohio State or Alabama wins a football national championship

There’s nothing to celebrate being a member of the NCHC. There’s no glory being the homecoming team for every other school in the NCAA. There’s nothing for Miami and nothing for Miami fans in this win. It’s empty. As empty as Goggin has been this season and in seasons past.

Congratulations to Western’s players and their coaching staff. That’s about it.

Greg Brown is a really nice guy. That makes it little harder to hate him. :grinning:

That indirectly brings up a point that was made here at the NCHC’s inception: Miami no longer has any true rivals.

I still hate Michigan for what Jack Johnson did at Old Goggin, and there was pretty good hatred of BUGS and OSU as well.

Not that it could’ve been helped – Miami made the right call to join this league – but that did kill all of the RedHawks’ rivalries. And it’s hard to create new ones when you win one conference game in two seasons.

So that’s why it’s easier for me to root for anyone in Miami’s conference to win a championship.

Yep…I can’t tell you how hard it was to switch off the hatred and cheer for JJ during the Avs Cup run…he’s still my least favorite member of the team. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

I feel like WMU struck gold with their team this year. Nobody saw them running the table winning all this hardware- they were predicted to finish 6th in the conference. Now what’ll be interesting to see is if they keep it up over the years and can have continued success and postseason appearances/wins. If it was just a lucky year and all their players leave and they’re back to their usual business I won’t be too mad because anyone (even including us) has the possibility of popping off for one year. I’d be more upset if they showed that a MAC school can become a prominent college hockey team for an extended period of time before we find our way back to prominence. Only time will tell.

And someone correct me if I’m wrong but there is also something to be said about Michigan in general being more of a hockey state and even being a MAC team, WMU has that over us as the 2nd southernmost D1 team in the NCAA. That makes it harder for me to say we’re both MAC teams why can’t we do it. Plenty of non MAC schools are losing top players to teams with more money- Nodak has more hockey resources and clout than I can imagine and they’re still losing players to schools that can pay more. It’s not all about being in a lesser conference for the majority of sports -anyone can have those sorts of problems.

TLDR- it’s really more about us than it is about being a MAC school. Plus we’ve dug ourselves into such a deep hole that we have wayyyyy more work to do to get out of it than anyone else. WMU didn’t have to claw themselves out of an 0-23-1 season; their starting point was further ahead

And Jerry York is one of the greatest humans you’ll ever meet.

Even if he broke our hearts multiple times.

Someone tell Barry Schutte to get OU to make the leap to D1!

I am thankful for a lot of things in my life. One of the random ones is that I wasn’t old enough to be a Miami fan when that happened.

If it is just “a lucky year,” you still get the trophy and the banner. They don’t take those away if you return to mediocrity (or worse). After a decade of terrible records, I’d take a lucky year.

I think what’s in it for Miami fans is mostly seeing BU lose after the 2009 tragedy in DC. I’m not sure if as many people would still be rooting for WMU if it was Penn State instead.

I personally wanted the two former RedHawks to win because I don’t blame them for leaving and they deserve some success after what they went through here (especially drazner). WMU was the only team this year with multiple Miami transfers

And lastly most of the country was rooting for the broncos (including the other NCHC teams fans). Just because we stink and we’re in their conference doesn’t mean we should be chastised for having the same train of thought as everyone else.

I don’t think any Miami fan is pounding their chest and thinking we’re better because an NCHC team won-obviously we are not good and nothing but us actually showing we can win games is going to change that

I absolutely would too (part of what I said before is probably just me trying to talk myself into feeling better). And hey with the 14+ freshmen we’ll have lots of beginners luck next year!

Start booking your flights to Vegas now people :joy:

Ncaa throwing s bone to the “big” 10?

I am pounding my chest for WMU they are a classic MAC team, good school and they represent us well. Just because we suck in hockey right now doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be proud of one of our conference competitors. Come on guys if we don’t win we should at least support our conference.

Does it mean anything for our program, probably not but it doesn’t hurt us?

We just need to get our shit together we have no excuses, probably the best facilities and overall setup anyone could ask for, we just need to figure out how to win. Best conference by far, so no reason we should not be able to recruit. IMO hockey has the most upside for Miami, I’m a football and basketball guy, but we are in a really good position with hockey, we just got to get it together like we had it a few years ago.

Bonk,

I completely agree with the zero natural rivals. But that’s the Big10’s fault, not Miami’s in joining the NCHC. Had the remnants of the CCHA and WCHA just formed a “super conference” when the Big10 took Tosu, Michigan, and Michigan State from the CCHA and Wiscy and Minnesota from the WCHA, things could have been better from a regional rivalry perspective, but they weren’t.

Notre Dame ran off to Hockey East, which even Jackson (their HC) said was a dumb idea after a few years because it was a better brand name conference, but nobody cared about ND playing at Maine in late January. I didn’t see ND saying “Hey! Let’s keep things regionally aligned so we can remain close.” They didn’t care either when the CCHA as we knew it split.

The Big10 commissioner admitted a few years after forming their hockey conference it was a mistake with only 6 teams. But they wanted the TV revenue on their network. So they picked up ND when ND left Hockey East. It’s still a conference of names. We saw that in the NCAA’s this year. Michigan State and Tosu were the names and they got knocked out in the first round. Names on the front of sweaters means squat when the puck drops. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Big10 commissioner was on the phone with Western Michigan last night asking if they’d like to join their conference.

Miami did this to themselves. Yes, Miami was the bigger dog in college hockey at the time. But now playing non-conference at Miami is the equivalent of playing at Lake Superior State, Ferris State, Northern Michigan, & Michigan Tech. Other than the NCHC teams that have to play at Miami when required, no “names” will come to play at Goggin. Could Miami have said “Bowling Green needs to come with us or we’re not coming to the NCHC. We need to maintain the regional alignment with them.” Sure! At least say it in the press and make the rest of the NCHC tell BG, “You’re not worthy.” Or did Miami ask the NCHC to include BG with them, I don’t remember.

Western Michigan showed the new way on how to build a team. It’s gonna be tough to keep their HC there unless there’s a lot of cash coming into Kalamazoo that we’re not privy to.
