CM job security

Oh my! I just realized Michael Hawkins is “Helmet Guy.” He has a pic of himself with Bake posted on his Facebook page.

I don’t think the SID does much monitoring of the comments on their posts after they put them up. They probably ought to.

Hey, Tuesday night I stood next to Helmet Guy at the urinal at halftime. My brush with celebrity.

I don’t know who this is, but maybe he’s not a barometer of truth. Unlike me who picked Lamar for the top point upset!!!

The personal attacks on Ballcoach are not in the best traditions of MHT!

Personally, i am undecided on the current coaching staff. I remain convinced that most posters don’t have a realistic viewpoint of Miami’s place in the MAC or college football more generally. That having been said, they certainly aren’t overachieving.

I think any fair assessment has to take into account more than solely Ws and Ls. For 28 years i have been going to one or two away games per year. If you go to away games and spend time with Miami fans that means you are spending time with the parents of football players.

Parents are laughingly consistent. If their son is an underclassman who sees significant playing time the coacing staff is great! The team may be 2 and 8 but clearly great days are around the corner. Of course, if i am talking to a parent whose son is an upperclassmen who isn’t on the depth chart, the staff doesn’t know anything. Even if the team is 7-3.

That is where this staff is different. I am shocked to hear the parents of young men who are upperclassmen and probably can’t find the field with a map still raving about the coaches commitment to their son’s success.

A couple of years ago i was in a conversation with a Miami football alum. The alum was very successful and happened to have a player as an intern. The young man was a senior who was buried on the depth chart and did not contribute atheletically to the program but just the day before coach Martin had called to see how the internship was going.

An appropriate level of success on the field is vital but not the sole way of measuring the coaching staff.

I’ve only heard great things from players/parents about Coach Martin.

Say what you want about the play on the field and some of his decision making (horrible this year), but to say he’s not a good person or displaying erratic behavior is completely out of line.

That person who posted it is a Pathetic loser.

Please report personal attacks so I can deal with them. We don’t all have to be fans the same way.

Well said.

Sorry, fat fingers! I like your post.

This is Helmet Guy

Is this the guy you were quoting on Facebook as the source? I ask because I can’t follow the plot. Too many threads. And long days for work. Glad it’s almost Turkey Day. I hope you find happiness and family. Whoever is reading this.

Helmet guy is the guy on Facebook saying he has inside info about whatever bad stuff he says happened.

Oh…doh…

Had a brief encounter with Helmet Guy this year at the Cincy game. He kind of roamed the stands looking for a place to set up shop with his signs and stickers. We had a few empty seats by us and kind of in the middle of the Miami section. Had a nice little chat before the rightful occupiers of the seats showed up and he had to evacuate.

He’s not a Miami grad. I’d call him a “Townie”. Lives in Oxford and obvious, bit over the top, pre-game party hearty sort of huge fan.

My take is a little different. I am not alarmed at all that our head coach was hitting himself in the head and yelling obscenities after getting embarrassed on national tv at home by your MAC rival.

This has been a really bad year- we were supposed to win the league and we are awful. We ended up with a really easy schedule and are 4-6. The coaches he fired or left in their own were on the other side of a 37-21 loss. He should be stressed out of his mind

Question for the lawyers here. As a state university can they delete the Facebook posts without opening themselves up to a first amendment lawsuit? They have turned off comments so someone has seen them.

Hey, after that 4th down QB sneak…among other calls, I’d be shocked if he was not…it was a terrible showing against OU in the 2nd half (if that was our staff’s adjustment comparison…says it all).

To answer your question, the answer is “it depends”. As a public university, Miami is a quasi governmental entity. Therefore, they technically should not be able to block “free speech” on a social media forum they created. See this blog post.

However, if it is a private social media account, for instance, mine, then absolutely I can block who posts, delete posts, discriminate to my hearts content, and the 1st Amendment does not apply.

I believe there are other attorneys on here (Chuck, Yanks, Mollaun, Nickskin) and they may have a differing perspective or interpretation of the law.

This would actually be a good topic the next time I am doing my adjunct law school faculty duties!

Are ad hominem attacks on unelected individuals not considered public figures considered free speech? I guess CM could be considered a public figure or celebrity.

Did he hold up a sign that said “I’m done peeing”?
