It still boggles my mind that the 2010 Miami team was an underdog to a 6-6 Middle Tennessee State team in that bowl game. Four weeks earlier, Miami beat a top 25 NIU team for the conference title. MTSU had no significant victories that season.
andystef—Where I came from “winningest” would imply a winning percentage. His tenure, save for his bailout of the Treadwell disaster for which he deserves credit, has beyond that been mediocre.
I was in the room in the Bowels of Yager when B2 stated that Miami’s goal in FB should be to be in the class with Boise; on that score, Chuck has failed miserably while having the best facilities in the MAC.
We can do better and must do better.
CM is a nice guy but not a very competent coach.
That’s absolutely not going to happen if we continue to throw $8 million rosters at the MAC. With that type of resource disparity, any coach who isn’t a Don Treadwell, Ellis Johnson, Mike Jinx level dipshit should be winning minimum 5 conference games plus the FCS game every season.
Still coaching at 84! Tim Rose - Assistant Football Coach - Defensive Coordinator / Linebackers - Staff Directory - Ashland University
Good for TR at that age.
Gotta give the guy credit; he has always stayed in shape throughout the years.
Why is it other mid majors can hire coaches and not hire mediocrity? I don’t buy the “after CM is worse”. Jason Candle left Toledo and took many players with him. Toledo has a new coach and in year one is doing just fine. And that is an example directly from the MAC. If we can’t hire a competent coach after CM, then the axe needs to go higher up the food chain.
Sayler has managed to hire (and later extend) Steele, Box, and Smiley this decade. Miami as an athletic department isn’t a complete joke like we were in 2013 when we hired Chuck, we can and should aim for a substantial improvement.
Disagree. If Shane Montgomery was given 13 years, I believe he would have a superior overall record, better OOC record and better record v Power 4. That wouldn’t necessarily have made him even a good coach, just better than Martin. No doubt those teams he inherited were a disappointment but based on his fairly successful run as an OC since then, he could’ve easily put together a more complete staff than Chuck ever has. Shane was never given slack that Martin has for 13 mostly underwhelming years.
As far as Treadwell , yes Martin brought Miami back to mediocrity (after 4 seasons) but outside of one season, is a total disappointment. Treadwell and Martin do have one thing in common, neither were or are competent Head Coaches.
Shane wouldn’t have lasted 13 years. He isn’t head coach material. The situation we put him in was inexcusable, but there’s a reason no one else has offered him a head coaching position in the 17 years since we let him go. (I’m not counting his game as an interim at UMass.)
And yet he still beat UC, Syracuse, and hung with Ohio State.
He, at least as far as I know, did not do the “Classic Chuck Martin” speech that “we are honored to even step on their field” and “our best players could not even be a walk-on at their program” BS. There were definitely some flaws, but he was a super OC at the time and with proper resources who knows…
To be fair, when Shane became the assistant coach everyone wanted, he did have a future HOF QB, an offensive line that could have started in Columbus as a group, talented receivers and a good group of backs. You’re a much better coordinator when you have Big Ben playing behind a wall of an offensive line.
Great point, I was in school at miami in 2013, there was zero excitement lol Sayler has a much bigger pool of applicants available to him than he had back in 2013 and he’s hired some solid coaches for most of these teams, I get if he’s hesitant with CM because it is a big decision but it has to be made at some point

Miami student hit piece wasn’t on my bingo card!
Yeah was surprised to see this article. Author seemed to be reading the mind of this collective here. (or did they read our editorials?)
They do!
While I certainly don’t disagree with the sentiment, and I appreciate that it exists, the article does lose some credibility immediately by incorrectly calling UConn an FCS program.
A legend in Oxford?
Imo it was probably added to emphasize that the writer isn’t some blind Chuck hater, driving his message of “he’s done a lot here but we need a change.” Which is fair, for better or worse he’s the face of Miami football for a generation of fans.
