The TV announcers continue to tell their audiences that Chuck Martin is Miami’s winningest football coach. They should also mention he is Miami’s losingest coach and furthermore, he has a losing record (72-74). Outside the MAC he is 13-40. The 13 wins include: such powerhouses as: 2015 Presbyterian; 2017 Austin Peay; 2019 Tennessee Tech; 2021 Long Island U and North Texas State; 2022 Robert Morris; 2023 Delaware State and UMass; 2024 UMass; 2025 Lindenwood; and 2026 Holy Cross. He did manage to beat Northwesstern in 2022 and UC in 2023 (his only win against UC in 13 games.
As for clock mismanagement let us not forget Mississippi State in 2016, UC in 2017, and BGSU in 2026. I’m sure there are others.
As for memorable losses: 2014 Eastern KY (D2) and 2016 Eastern Illinois (D2).
He’s had one double digit win season: 2023 (11-3). The three losses included App State in Cure Bowl, Miami (FL), and WMU.
He has won the MAC twice in 12 years.
And this is the school we proudly proclaim: THE CRADLE OF COACHES.
Chuck Martin is an embarrassment to Miami University Football.
I know this is nit-picking your point, which I wholeheartedly agree with, but North Texas (sans State) was/is an FBS team. Not sure if you were implying they were FCS.
It’s certainly an interesting note that in addition to being out winningest coach, he is also our losingest. I didn’t realize this.
Good week to raise this since, coincidentally, the five guys before Chuck* also lost a total of 74 games combined. Unfortunately, they only won half as many – 36. I keep repeating myself, but it bears remembering that the 1970s are over (although I’m guessing one or two of you still have a leisure suit in a disused closet). And I continue to assess that it’s far more likely that the next Miami coach, whenever that happens, will be more likely to produce results like those five immediate Chuck Martin predecessors than they are to be the next Dick Crum or Randy Walker.
Yes, the 70’s days of glory are hard for many of us to let go of, but I might also mention that except for the end of the Rose era we were a very competitive program throughout the 80’s, 90’s, and early 2000’s. In those years we continued to have occasional OOC success against power conference opponents.
And thanks for the reminder, DG, but my leisure suits are thankfully all long gone! Hopefully all photographic evidence has also been destroyed!
Finally somebody reporting on Miami football with some balls. I wonder if Middleton is on HawkTalk? Keep up the good work and keep asking the necessary tough questions at the pressers.
I’m a bit too young to have lived through leisure suits, but I hope there are no remaining pics of the maroon tuxedo I wore to my high school prom. (See “Footloose,” 1984.)
While I can agree on some points of this and I actually dont want Martin fired (yet) this is a completely unfair argument to make it seem like 5 coaches failed before Martin got it right
Bath and Guidry were interim coaches (and Guidry won his only game) they dont count
Haywood took over a disaster and won a MAC title in year 2 and left. Who knows what the future held but that was pretty good
Martin is unquestionably better than Treadwell and Montgomery
Hmmm….One of those coaches won the MAC and then got hired by Pitt. (Last Miami football coach to be hired by a bigger program, so landing a coach like that would be great. ) The next guy coached a bowl because his head coach left, but he won the bowl (our first in a decade) with perhaps the greatest speech ever told to a team and also had an excellent gumbo recipe he freely offered to all MU fans. Shane had no resources but was still respectable one year. And…beat UC, Syracuse and hung with Ohio State. Also was a hire from outside the program which seems to be desired by the fans instead of a coach being chosen from within. Bath doesn’t count. Cannon fodder. And the guy who put us in the ditch by cancelling our weight program and running the option is ironically the last MU football coach who beat a top 25 team. Which is honestly wild. Some amalgam of all these coaches except for Bath (because again, he was an intern/cannon fodder) would be pretty great. We’d win a MAC, we’d beat a top 25 team. We’d win a bowl and get a great gumbo recipe, we’d have a coach good enough to be poached by a bigger team and we’d have hired that coach from a better program.
