@Kentuckygentleman As hard as it is to admit it, UC is a better job right now than Nebraska and several other B1G programs. I would be surprised if Luke ever leaves for anything except TOSU or ND.
He’s going to be the starting QB at Xavier!
Undefeated since 1973!
I agree, @NESCADAD. And props to UC and Fickel for the job they have done (as hard as it is to type that).
My point was that at that high level UC has been able to implement a winning culture. Why can’t we have a winning culture at our G5 level? Why can’t we always be a top-10 G5 team just as Fickel has said he want to always be a top 10 P5 team?
Paging @yanksalex…
We should be a far more competitive G5 program. Maybe our persistent focus on UC is now misplaced. Tim Murphy started the campaign to denigrate Miami and grab full control of southwestern Ohio way back in the day before he left for Harvard. Brian Kelly put the Cincy superiority/Miami inferiority script on steroids. Butch Jones continued to push the narrative when he was there. We never pushed back. We should have been in a position to fight back during the Terrible Tommy era but by then Don’T pretty well had converted us to a middling FCS program. Fickle got there at the same time as CM got to Miami but by then we were way behind the competitive curve. CM had a shot at the Cats in 2017 but it went down the drain with Timeout-gate. That’s when things in the FBS started changing drastically and we have never caught up. Murphy was evil but Kelly was toxic to Miami’s program. And now Fickle has only widened the chasm between the two programs.
Honestly, I don’t know where we’re going in the grand scheme of things. And those of us who care seem to be a group of dying dinosaurs. The white flag of surrender seems to be flying in Oxford.
Since we’re talking about QB’s… the coaches don’t seem to really know what their DNA is in terms of scheme to recruit to. They’ve offered and signed so many different types it screams of lack of confidence in their system. Great coaches know exactly what they want, will win with - and recruit to that plan.
Kelly and Fickell have had the advantage of a school leadership that has been very aggressive in supporting the athletic department. There hasn’t been a coach at Miami in recent memory that has had that support.
2017 was Fickle’s first year at UC. Chuck was in year 4 at that point.
Chuck blew his best two chances at beating them while they were down in 16 & 17.
Yep, @2XHawk. Many tend to write off 14 and 15 for him because of how bad we’d become under Don’T. 16 started as an 0-6 abomination but going 6-0 the rest of the way and being competitive in the bowl game rescued him. Timeout-gate was a critical moment. We never recovered from that vs UC.
Guessing Gabbert ends up at Mizzou. Seems like his girlfriend goes there, back home so has all the connections, can probably be the starter. As I said before, I wish him nothing but the best. I think Brett being consistently hurt was a combination of our play calling/decisions, but also how Brett plays. He seems to enjoy taking hits, even on QB runs where he could do a normal slide he chooses not to. He is an undersized QB with a ton of talent, but being smaller makes him more susceptible to injuries.
Current starter (Brady Cook) put up decent numbers this year. Would Gabbert really want to compete with him?
My guess is the he is more likely to end up at nearby Iowa. Hawkeyes QB Alex Padilla just jumped into the portal. Nobody but Brett and the school he eventually goes to knows.
Alex Padilla is not good. None of the Iowa QBs are. If you can’t beat out Spencer, and he’s had his chances, you really should look at lesser schools.
I said as soon as Brett Gabbert announced likely landing sports would be Missouri and Iowa. Well here is the latest rumor, and add Kentucky. I know he has many detractors who don’t think he can be a P5 QB, and maybe they are right, maybe they are wrong. I guess we will see.
I don’t think anyone has really said he can’t be a P5 QB…personally, I said he just gets hurt a bit too often with his style of play and how he scrambles/slides
I know Missouri is an obvious choice but Iowa seems like a better fit. Better chance at team success and good god being able to provide any boost in offense for the Hawkeyes makes you look like a star.
Best fit for Brett is to stay at Miami -if we can keep most of our top 44 O and D players together who almost all have eligibility ( Shaffer you should also stay ) - he could be on a 10-2 team that would be ranked and playing for an excellent bowl bid- I hope. this is the message that the staff is giving to all of our players
I hope Gabbert gets to go where he wants. I bet it’s Missouri. I think McNamara ends up at Iowa.
There’s absolutely no evidence of this staff, as currently construed, to put together a 10-2 season. I don’t blame any kid for searching for the best fit for him, on and off the field.
