I believe a colonoscopy might be a requirement.
This job gets better by the post
OldRedskin said it best above dump the non D1 schools and play mid majors, maybe an occasional UC, X or Dayton if we can get a fair deal.
Further I think the MAC should set up more mid major conference vs other Mid major conferences, could maybe be half our OOC schedule?
As far as I know, Miami has only been ranked in the AP poll twice in the history of the program.
#25 on Feb. 15, 1999, which was immediately followed by two straight MAC losses after which Miami was dropped from the top 25. Finished 24-8 overall and 15-3 in the MAC. Notable wins at Notre Dame and at home against Dayton and Tennessee, and of course two NCAA tournament wins against Washington and Utah.
#19 in March 1978. Finished 19-9 overall and 12-4 in the MAC. Notable wins at Purdue, at home against X, a neutral floor win against Texas A&M, and a NCAA tournament win against the defending national champs Marquette.
Some notable Miami teams that were never ranked in the AP poll…
The 1983-84 team finished 24-6 overall and 16-2 in the MAC. Notable wins at Indiana and at home against Dayton, X, and UC.
The 1985-86 team finished 24-7 overall and 16-2 in the MAC. Notable wins at home against Dayton, X, at UC, and a neutral floor win against Virginia Tech.
The 1991-92 team finished 23-8 overall and 13-3 in the MAC. Notable wins at Dayton and at home against X.
The 1992-93 team finished 22-9 overall and 14-4 in the MAC. Notable wins at Penn State, at home against Dayton, and an NIT win against Ohio State.
The 1994-95 team finished 23-7 overall and 16-2 in the MAC. Notable wins at home against Dayton and an NCAA tournament win against Arizona.
Unfortunately, history has shown that without a few notable OOC wins and a near perfect MAC season, the AP voters will not look twice at Miami.
EDIT: I stand corrected on the number of times Miami has been ranked in the AP poll (see The_Sackman below)
This is exactly how I used to think as well but then I learned about why we schedule 2 a year most years. Everyone wants a better schedule (coaches included) I think it will improve.

Am I correct that an AP ranking would be the first for the MAC since 2018-19 UB? Shows how times have changed when they were able to schedule WVU, St. Bonaventure, Syracuse, and Marquette. They were AP ranked just a week into the season, though making the Round of 32 the previous March and beating ranked WVU on the road helped. If I recall correctly we spotted them 18 points at tip-off before clawing back and falling late.
Didn’t Miami have a final rank of 20 in 1999? Maybe that was Coaches Poll
Thanks for reminding me where I was in March 1978! I was just saddling up to the bar at the old Swiftsure Inn on the inner harbor in Victoria, BC. I saw the score on the US channel scoreboard show and ordered myself a pint on Molson Export to celebrate!
That was the coaches poll. There was no final AP poll released that season.

FYI McNeil is a Miami grad and he’s a fantastic follow on Twitter
Indeed he is
Just some back of the napkin thoughts on ranking chances after the first batch of games this week, and I don’t think it looks too favorable unless we just see an attitude shift towards us being undefeated:
#25 Seton Hall will fall out after losing to UConn but their spot (probably a bit higher) will be taken by #27 Kansas who defeated #2 Iowa St.
#20 Louisville lost, but its unlikely they fall all the way out since its a “good loss” to UVA (how convenient to lose 3 of 4 games and still get to be ranked) and they should beat Pitt this weekend. Even if they fall out, SLU should have pole position on that spot.
Iowa (#28) will either lose to Purdue tonight and be cleared out for us or win and definitely be jumping up into the rankings. We definitely need the Boilers to show up and they should.
Other than that, I’d say we need UK to show some life and win over Tenn later this week and maybe another unlikely upset depending on what voters do with Louisville. I don’t really see many other likely losses from the bottom of the rankings.
Another issue is the 3 teams ranked directly behind us (Villanova, Wisconsin, Miami-F) all won on the road last night. None of the wins were all that impressive, but all 3 could easily pass us if they win on Saturday.
Hopefully the SVP segment and other media spotlights on us continue to draw the curiosity of the voters.
You know what? Screw it! I don’t want Miami to be ranked. We get more nationwide pub and media attention out of being unranked and undefeated. Just keep winning.
I’ve taken this approach. Screw the AP writers (except the ones who give the guys the credit they deserve). Screw most of the coaches who are also voters. Screw Lunardi. Screw Rothstein.
Screw ‘em all. Go into scorched earth mode. Love and Honor.
To be fair, Lunardi has us as an 11 seed against Tennessee in Buffalo this morning.
Yeah but he has to because he has us as the current projected auto bid.
I’m just going to put this here as I have no where else to put it. I just received an email from MO Senator Eric Schmitt, since I am one of his constituents. Apparently SLU is pushing to move from the A10 to the Big East. I wasn’t aware of that.
A little more history here…
By Week 11, which is where the 2025-26 NCAA men’s basketball season currently stands, the 1978-79 Indiana State team was undefeated (20-0) and ranked #2 in the AP poll. Indiana State debuted in the AP poll at #20 (6-0) in Week 3 and by Week 12 (Feb 12, 1979) they were #1 at 23-0. In Week 13 they dropped to #2, even though they were still undefeated, but regained the #1 spot in Week 14 and held onto that spot until they lost in the NCAA national championship game against Michigan State. Their non-conference resume wasn’t particularly good though they beat Purdue in Week 1 in West Lafayette. They did however beat the Soviet National Team in a pre-season exhibition game.
