AP TOP 25

Coaches poll has fewer voters, but this one always snubs mid-majors.

Coaches poll has us at #36. This is some outright bull pucky. Keep on winning. And as Jim Morrison said, “Break on Through to the Other Side!”

I almost think it’s better for us to stay under the radar for now. Less incentive for other teams to ‘A game’ us.

Andy Katz ranked us 34 in his power 37. Up from 36 last week. https://www.ncaa.com/news/basketball-men/article/2026-01-04/byu-cracks-top-10-michigan-state-falls-latest-mens-basketball-power-37-rankings

The drop off from #26 Villanova (127) to #27 Seton Hall (31) is kind of insane.

Bill Clinton was president last time we were ranked. Maybe the voters aren’t used to seeing our name yet.

If I’m counting right, we’ve played 4 teams who aren’t in D1 (Trinity Christian, Mercyhurst, IU East, Milligan). I’m not sure exactly how those games are counted when it comes to the computer rankings, or if they count at all. I’m also not sure how we even scheduled like that in the first place when there are over 360 teams in D1. I can see scheduling one or maybe two tops, but four? That’s probably going to haunt us throughout the season when it comes to rankings and the post-season tournament selection time. We’re great this year, but the powers that be are going to look at that schedule and doubt us.

Mercyhurst is newly D1

Mercyhurst is in the Northeast Conference. So just three.

Let’s compare two teams:

Team A

12-2 overall

Q1: 0-2

Q2: 2-0

Team B

15-0 overall

Q1: 0-0

Q2: 3-0

Guess which team is ranked 19th and which is not ranked

Prof, you’ve been under the ice on that sub mission for a few months now and likely missed all this so I’ll catch you up. First, we tried to schedule a ton of great schools but none of them would play us as we good. And they’d be paying us for a loss in many cases. Then, we tried to schedule a bunch of decent schools but they also were afraid and wouldn’t play us. Then too much time elapsed and we couldn’t get anyone so we settled for what we could get. But then, we decided to give them all the finger and win every game. So that’s why we have 3 non D1 teams. If it’s any constellation, I think we usually have 3 on our schedule. Certainly at least 2.

Every MAC (and most midmajor) plays them. Akron played 2 non d1 games. Boise state who might end up playing in the NCAA tournament lost to a D2 school

Mercyhurst beat Loyola Chicago this year

Look, I’m not saying we’re the 25th best team in the country. I know our schedule was garbage. But you know darn well that if Duke had played the same schedule and was 15-0, not only would they be ranked, they’d probably be top 5 because of their name.

If you look at the AP poll, there isn’t one mid major not named Gonzaga (and I don’t count them as a mid major in basketball anymore) in the top 25. Just like in FB there is a clear bias against mid majors in BB. There are 2 one loss teams in the Atlantic 10 who aren’t getting the respect they deserve either.

I don’t think we deserve Top 25 yet, brutally weak schedule and we lost our PG. if we had played Dayton, UC or X and beat them instead of the non D1 teams we would already be Top 25.

As I write this we are barely beating WMU at home and they seem to have several non D1 talented players. Coach Steele not happy at the half, he knows.

Let’s get this win and focus on Toledo Friday and then we might sneak in?

Agree - it is too early to start complaining - lets get wins against Toledo , Kent, Buffalo and U Mass - then we can start a campaign - if we play like we did tonight v Toledo this will be a moot discussion.

20 Louisville 19 lowa 18 Georgia and 25 UCF have all lost tonight
