25/26 Other NCAA Basketball

Michigan would not give up. I think they held UCONN to 4 points in the third.

UMass loses to Green Bay in the Paradise Jam. Phoenix sporting a 295 KenPom and lost 28 games last year. Not a great loss. I haven’t been overly impressed with the Minutemen so far.

Holy moly that is an AWFUL loss.

I saw alot of chatter from UMass fans that they expected to walk in and immediately be a top MAC team. I think they are about to learn a lesson year. That said, I do think they will be a top tier MAC team in the future (but no more than Akron, Kent, us, Toledo, and OU have been historically).

The only thing that is impressing me about UMass is where I’ll be sitting for the 2/17 game at Amherst (2nd row behind the Miami bench).

Also, the UMass ticket office wasn’t able to identify which sections were behind the team benches. I watched Minutemen highlights to confirm it. So UMass is at least embracing the standard MAC ineptitude when it comes to running a ticket office.

You get whomped by Doug Gottlieb, you aren’t a real team.

I mean seriously can we kick them out for that?

“Taking UMass football is worth it because we’ll get UMass basketball” - MAC athletic directors and presidents

I have no issue with taking wins.

Akron up to #55 in the KenPom, which is the highest mid major team outside of Gonzaga and St Mary’s. They play #83 Yale in the finals of the
Paradise Jam today.

Akron looks scary right now. They are destroying everyone they play. Beat the piss out of a good Iona team on Friday and demolished Evansville yesterday.

Akron is damn good and deep. And while I haven’t looked at the computer rankings, their, Akron’s, level of competition looking at the teams they have played seem much tougher than who we have played.

I just mentioned how deep Akron is. As an example, they have 6 players averaging at least 10.0 ppg. Which means, they don’t have one go to scoring option, they have many. 9 players average 10 or more minutes a game as well. Right now, Akron, to me, is the best team in the MAC. Miami and Kent are close behind.

Miami has 5 players averaging 10 or more points per game. Miami has 10 players averaging 10 minutes or more a game. The reason I give Akron the edge is on paper their schedule seems tougher. But make no mistake Akron and Miami are two deep teams. Kent is close with 4 players averaging 10ppg a game or more and 9 players averaging 10 minutes a game or more. And Gillespie for Kent is averaging a double double at 20.3ppg and 12.9 rpg. Arguably the best player/impact player, in the MAC.

Yes, I think an honest ranking of the MAC has:

Tier 1 - The Big Favorite - Akron

Tier 2 - Looking Like Contenders - Miami, Kent

Tier 2.5 - Maybe a Contender - Buffalo, Toledo

Tier 3 - Could be Tough or Could be Bad - OU, UMass, BG

Toledo with a big win over Troy this morning. Todd K seems more than ready to fail miserably in March again.
