24 Team Playoff is Here

To no one’s surprise, the G6 get screwed. 1 team in. And AFCA has recommended to end conference championship games. Read that as if it isn’t required, the likes of ESPN isn’t going to pay for it. And who the hell knows what is going to happen to bowl games. Likely dying as I type this.

Emphasizing the point I just made:

I just don’t understand how all FBS conferences don’t get at least 1 spot….

These asshats running the college FB “shit show” could next expand to 48 teams from the now likely 24…and still give the G6 one shot…all to avoid “restraint of trade” lawsuits. Boise will almost always get in…and the MAC will never get in.

Brutal. Looks like ESPN is all in on more playoff games at the expense of conference championship games and mid to low tier bowl games.

The G conferences are essentially locked out of the playoff (except for a Boise State maybe), and the buy game money may also dry up as P programs maybe reduce their regular season to 10 games to allow for protracted playoffs.

How does this affect our collective enthusiasm for spending $30 million to sit at a taller chair at the kids’ table?

Unchanged as long as it’s some fool parting with their money and not something the school is paying for.

Otherwise, this news should surprise no one.

Exactly. It’s a high speed train to nowhere.

Certainly, the G6 should have more representation but from our perspective does it really change things all that much? As it currently stands we are fighting for one G6 playoff spot, and apparently that will continue to be the case. The merits of spending all this money for 1 pie in the sky playoff spot are certainly debatable but I don’t see how the bigger bracket makes any difference in the debate.

And honestly, depending on how byes work, the G6 team might have a better chance to win a first round game.

Dont worry, Disney and the other media organizations are currently lobbying Congress hard to pass the PCSA which will marginalize the G6 even further. After that, none of this will matter anyway.

To me, this feels like moving to a better G6 is more critical than ever. Weaker, less-well-funded leagues like the MAC and CUSA will just continue to lose relevance.

Unless…the G6 leagues all work together to structure themselves in a way that promotes competitiveness across all leagues, reasonable travel expenses, revenue sharing, etc. What could we accomplish if the G6 said goodbye to the morass of the power 4 spending and backbiting and struck out on its own? We all agree that y the SEC and B10 will go their own say, and take the best of the ACC and B12 with them. What if the G6 made the first move and booted them out?

One could argue that all of the G6 are weaker and losing relevance. It isn’t just MAC and CUSA.

One could argue, and I have elsewhere, that not only is the MAC becoming irrelevant, but it may cease to exist. Frist thought I had reading about the expansion to 24 is something raised above: should we still move to American if that circumstances allow it. I say yes, as it gives us a better chance at the one G6 scrap when looking at finances and other factors. But I have been advocating for years that the G6 in football needs to break away from the P4. There is less and less reason to stay. If there is network interest, maybe the G6 should just take over the bowl games.

I was cautiously in favor of expansion from 4 to 12, but in hindsight the slippery slope accusers were 100% correct. This is a travesty.

Why stop at 24???
Go for 48.
Oh, screw it…go for the full 68.
It’s only a few more baby steps.
College FB died a decade ago…anything after that is just more nails in the coffin.

I’m not opposed to 24 (FCS has been at 24 for years and it works), but expanding to 24 without giving an autobid to every conference is an absolute joke.

I am fine with 24 as long as the other bowls are gone. Make a good season worth something, 1 auto for G6 is good. Would like a path for another G6 if there were two really good teams, but really is there much possibility of that happening?

At some point I would like relegation, but that is really hard with all sports. The cost of college and declining enrollment will at some point start to take some of these schools out of sports or even existence, which is probably a good thing. Deflation of costs is coming even in an inflationary world we are in. College isn’t for everyone, at some point we need to separate pro sports from college. Maybe G4 simply becomes a pro league. Maybe we can get back to real collegiate competition without so much money influence. Who knows, I think there is a lot of change coming.
