Miller will not officially be let go until 4/1 when the buyout drops from 9.9MM to 4.7MM
Yeah I read somewhere that UC was in negotiations with Miller on that.
But I do think Steele will leave. Groce makes about $800K per year. Kim English, who was just let go at Providence was making $2MM per year. Steele would be a quality candidate for Providence. BC, GT, Syracuse.
Hope you are wrong but if money is a key driver than we wonāt be able to keep him here. I do think Sayler will pony up a salary offer above Groceās.
I donāt think money is really that big of an issue for Steele, may be more of an issue of running his own program the way he wants to. Guys like English, Porter Moser, Wes Miller, etc., are all going to be going back to mid-majors, and then try another bite at the apple for a bigger program. And then after they donāt do well at the 2nd bigger program, they go back to a smaller mid-major.
Kind of a not fun way to live, imo. If you have the opportunity to be a Brad Stevens or a Mark Few, you have institutional support to do it your way, and money isnāt the driving factor, seems like it might be the way to go.
Imho.
One person to consider is Dusty May. He made the final four with FAU and came back the next year and retained most of his roster in the process. I have no idea if Steele is going to stay or go, but that model of backing up the great year with another really good year and waiting for the right job to open up makes the most sense to me. I would assume his dream job is Butler. Thatās not opening up now but may be open in a year. I could see him waiting, running it back, and finding a job after next season thatās a better fit.
If you look at the jobs above, Providence is going to try and hire Bryan Hodgson at South Florida, Boston College might be the worst power conference job in the country, and Syracuse (no offense to us) is going to aim higher that the head coach of Miami (OH). In these examples, heās either not their first choice, or itās a bad fit.
I like the Dusty May analogy, redhawk10.
May analysis is very well stated.
Porter Moser staying put in OK
Moserās buyout was $5.8M
The AD is new (January 2026) and heās realizing NIL needs to be addressed in sports outside of football
Thad Matta is leaving Butler now

One of my biggest worriesā¦thats a Job that could tempt Travis to move
This is the one that scares me the most. Relatively close to Cincy, Alama Mater, Big East job with lots of potential and resources. Iāve heard Ronald Noredās name mentioned for this as well. Heās an assistant for the Atlanta Hawks, who played on their final four teams, but I would assume Travis will also be in the mix. Hell, I could also see Groce as a candidate for this one. He was an assistant there as well, and is also from Indiana.
Butlerās resources are greater than Miami but relative to the rest of the Big East they are at the bottom. Understand why he would make the move since itās his alma mater but he would be moving to rebuilding job with resources that donāt compare to the rest of the conference.
Trilly Donovan (whether you believe in his credibility or not, he has sources) mentioned Ronald Nored, John Groce, and Travis Steele as the three names heās heard around the Butler job in the last month.
I donāt think Groce would steal a job from a family member that is an alum but hopefully they like Nored better
Butler is a bottom 4 big east job. As soon as Providence and Georgetown stop tripping over themselves they are bottom 2.
I swear Iām not just saying this because I want to keep Steele, Iād hire Groce first. I love Travis, but I think his brother is an objectively better coach with a way more proven track record.
But yes, letās just pray itās Nored.
A couple other names I saw. Some make sense. Others not so much Michah Shrewsberry. Was an assistant under Brad Stevens but has been kind of a disaster at Notre Dame. Maybe, but I doubt it. Chris Holtmann. Already at a Big East school, but if Butler is one of the worst Big East jobs, Depaul is the worst. That one I could kind of see, although that would be really embarrassing for Depaul.
