I happen to believe MHT would make for a good search committee. ![]()
Sorry, I was just going off my head of guys who play.
I think Sayler would admit he had some misses early on but I feel like every program has a good coach right now (I am not really up to speed on track and CC but those seem to be programs not as good as before)
It wasnāt just Hendrix. He hired Cleve Wright.
Sayler has made 11 hires across football, basketball, hockey, and baseball (Martin, Owens, Steele, Wright, Duffy, Hendrix, Box, Bergeron, Noreen, Hayden, and Smiley), he fired 5 of them and only 1 was hired away. It isnāt a stellar track record, but heās either gotten lucky recently or changed his approach because the current group of coaches is a solid group.
Sayler mentioned in a recent interview (Redhawk rewind?) that he has changed his approach to hiring. His old process was to use a bigger internal committee to execute the search, but now itās just him and the administrator of the sport making the hire.
That is correct and that is why I said above that he has learned from his mistakes.
Per Jeff Goodman, Utah State is reportedly hiring University of Northern Iowa HC Ben Jacobsen as their new HC. Jacobson, 55, has been the head coach at UNI since 2006 and has won 397 games in his time with the Panthers.
Wowā¦this kinda sucks
Justin Gainey to NC State. Not a surprise as he was rumored to be a if not the top choice all along. Certainly was in NC State fan polls.
Relieved it worked out this way. If Schertz had been the choice, St. Louis wouldāve been one Iād be worried about to poach Steele.
This one is a bit of a shocker, but the Mountain West is basically the only non-power conference that consistently gets multiple bids every year.
You know as a local, but SLU has a lot of old money connections that are probably gonna keep them semi-relevant into the next generation of college sports. Theyāre still in the A10 at the end of the day and will never be a power, but SLU always seems to be a pretty well-run school.
Sounding like Groce is definitely going to College of Charleston.
Truth is basketball is it for SLU. No football, no hockey. Soccer is big. But basketball is the sport. So they donāt have to spread alumni dollars around to other major sports. They can concentrate their NIL donations predominantly to basketball.
=>Done deal.
Per Pete Thamel, āPer a source, John Groce has informed the Akron team heās leaving for Charleston.ā
It will be interesting to see what players from Akron follow Groce to Charleston.
The thing is he doesnāt have much to bring. Could be part of why heās leaving, but five out of Akronās top six players are seniors. Two to watch will be Eric Mahaffey and Sharron Young. Could definitely see those two going with him. That being said, said if Eric wants to stay closer to home and follow in his dadās footsteps Iād take him in a heartbeat.
Nice real estate options (albeit pricy!)
In greater Charleston area.
The islands just north of town (Daniels and Mt. Pleasant) are booming as well. Can go big time at Sullivanās Island or Isle of Palms, etc., or even in the city itself near campus as he should be able to afford it.
