Yep, starting staff is a mess both on the field and on the DL.
Reds drop two in a row at home to the Braves. Starting pitcher today 9.90 ERA. Lost in the Elly excitement are two outstanding seasons by 2 other Reds rookies, McClain and Steer. McClain today with 5 RBIs. Steer 2 hits, and another RBI bringing him to 43 RBI on the year.
May be lost to some, but not us. Elly still has lots of holes that those two guys do not have.
I would not mind trading our top minor league SS who is also supposedly really good for a good young starting pitcher, someone like Sears of the Athletics.
Iâm tired of trading away good talent in the minors. Damn it, hold onto some of it and figure out a way to get the hot bats swinging.
The Reds donât trade away highly ranked prospects often but have a pretty good recent history when they do.
2018 Jeter Downs and Josiah Gray for Puig and Kyle Farmer
2019 Shed Long for Sonny Gray
2020 Taylor Tramell for Trevor Bauer
None of those four have had any type of significant impact for their new team.
Puig was what the Reds needed. Leadership and willingness to do whatever (remember the fight vs the Pirates) and the seeds were doing OK. Then they trade Puig to Cleveland by the All Start break.
Keep some talent in the minors. When injuries happen in the Reds, and they will, then theyâll have a better chance to get things going
We already have two superior young studs starring in the majors at SS. We have a desperate need for a good young starting pitcher with years of team control. This would be finding a team with a need for a good young SS with a good young SP. Trading good young players so both teams could fill a need. I mentioned. Sears because he looks like he could give 5-7 quality innings consistently. That is a desperate need right now, and he should be solid for many years.
Iâm pretty sure no one is advocating for gutting the minors to win this year only. They have an unexpected chance to make the playoffs and they need to make moves that will solidify that without jeoprodizing the future.
As Dick said someone like Marte would have to bring in return a top level starter with 3+ years of control and that would be a great deal for both clubs.
Sears would be under team control for 5 seasons.
Alex Wood would be an example of a rental option and someone they could possibly get without giving up the future. I saw Gleyber Torres mentioned as a possible trade option for Wood. If thatâs where the market is at Senzel would also be a possible fit and wouldnât impact Reds future.
Pitching is awful for the Reds. That said is fun to watch this very young team.
Agree with all of the comments above. Good offensive team, but unless they address the pitching, not much will come of this season.
I would normally say after going 1/17 over the last 4 games, and no XBH, and with an average now down to .167, it would be time to sit Votto. But not today! Votto has been outstanding against Mike Wacha, who the Padres have on the mound today. Votto against Wacha:
Joey Votto (CIN) vs. Michael Wacha (SDP): 53 PA, .370/.434/.674, 2 HR
So letâs hope history repeats itself and this trend continues!
Ashcraft looked great yesterday and Williamson was excellent today. One can dream of a rotation with Greene, Lodolo, Ashcraft, Abbott, and Williamson. Hope to see that in August, with an eye toward 2024-26.
Sadly, Votto went 0-3 yesterday, and now his season average is down to .152. He is 1 /20 with no XBH in the last 6 games he has played. Hopefully, he can right his ship. It will be interesting to see what Red or Reds make it on the all star team. I would guess Diaz. But I think McClain and Steer deserve consideration as well.
Votto needs to sit a bit. Let the younger guys who are hitting get back on the field
Are you sure? After all, he is a âfuture HOFâ. Is it right to sit him? Shouldnât he be allowed to play no matter how his performance affects a contending team, based on his lifetime achievements?
The Reds did the right thing today moving Votto to DH. Steer played first base where he should be. Stephenson replaced Votto and homered at DH.
Iâm with you, Blues, that JV is a future HOF. But if the Reds want to contend and stay near the top of the division, keeping JV out of the lineup may become a necessity. Itâs a âwhat have you done for me latelyâ and batting .179 ainât doing it.
Who said â If Votto determines he canât get it done heâll pull himself outâ ?
Actually with his 0-2 today his average is down to .143. He is 1/22 over the last 7 games he has played.
Apparently Alexis Diaz will be the only Red in the AS game. Shame McClain and Steer didnât make it.
Votto
