Women’s Basketball Portal-Players To Miami!

I wish her well and hope she is happy at Butler. She certainly had a major impact on our program in her two years.

But, can Butler offer significantly more money than we can? If it’s not about money then why would she leave? Most likely, we’ll never know.

I suspect that Tamar (or some uninformed agent that got into her head) wanted to go to a Power 4 college. Not everyone gets to a P4 college via the Transfer Portal after a great year at a mid-major college, for whatever reason.
Perhaps the P4 colleges did not come calling and Butler University was the runner up prize. For many colleges, once a player puts their name in the Transfer Portal, that’s the end of their time at their current college. The head coach needs to move on and plan for the future, not wait to see if that player who decided to leave will have a change of heart depending on what kind of interest there is in the Transfer Portal market.

What I am saying is that is possible that she (or her agent or handlers) made a mistake, and there is no going back (to Miami). As a side note, an Israeli player named Hila Karsh reportedly got 6 figures to go to Purdue for the 2025-26 season. Things didn’t exactly pan out at Purdue and she is in the Transfer Portal herself. It’s unclear if Purdue, which had another subpar season, “fired” Karsh or if there were other reasons for putting her name in the Transfer Portal. What is sure is that Tamar Singer is a superior player to Hila Karsh and that showed when Miami played a guarantee game at Purdue this season. In a small country like Israel, the players all know each other. Something like that could cause a player to say, “hey, I am better than her and she makes 6-figures, so I should too…”

I agree that it is unlikely Butler is offering significantly more “Revenue Sharing” money than Miami. It seemed as though Tamar liked Miami on and off the court, based on the interviews and articles written on her this season, just a few weeks before the Transfer Portal opened. Perhaps someone has other knowledge.

Regarding Butler and the Big East, it is obviously a higher profile basketball conference than the MAC. However it should be noted that Big East women’s basketball in this coronation of the conference, is not nearly as strong as Big East men’s basketball. They are a 2-bid conference, three at most. And their automatic bid always goes to UConn. If UConn leaves for the Big 12 in the future, than Big East women’s basketball will barely be more prestigious than the Atlantic-10, a conference that gets at most 2 NCAA Tournament bids.

In any event, hopefully Tamar will do great at Butler, on and off the court, while Miami still contends for the MAC championship in 2026-07.

This makes no sense esp given the coaching support Box game her- there has to be more to this story.

P4 teams aren’t paying big money to 5’4” point guards. Plus, Butler just fired their coach and hired a new one. Yeah, there’s more to the story.

Maybe an agent overhyped the kind of offer she’d get when entering the portal? Wouldn’t be the first time.

I see speculation and “more to the story” is rampant. Just like the Miami WBB has no money”-which is false. I can say this-no one asked Tamar to leave. Offers were made. Good offers. Just like most MBB and WBB people decide to pursue other opportunities. Sometimes the market isn’t what you thought it would be. This is no different than what some of our MBB have learned. And just like players decide to move on, programs decide and have to move on and forward.

I can say this-no one asked Tamar to leave.

Isn’t this more or less obvious? Usually a school isn’t going to ask one of their star players to leave if the player was not a trouble maker. Considering all the local media human interest stories on Tamar Singer recently, it doesn’t seem like she was a trouble maker.

I agree 100%.

As anyone who follows college sports these days, the new system created an environment where there is significantly less loyalty. So coaching staffs being supportive to a player, especially one of their star players, isn’t necessarily going to be the deciding factor on why that players is retained.

Star players at mid-major programs tend to enter the Transfer Portal for money or the prestige of playing at a higher level, namely a Power Four conference college.

If a player is really good and a P4 coaching staff deems the player will contribute to their program, they will pay the money their “Revenue Sharing” budget allows to poach the player, regardless of whether the player is 5’4”, 5’2” or 6’7”.

Many Portal destinations end up at colleges with new coaches. Many new coaches have to rebuild the entire roster in this current climate.

It will be interesting to see where Ilse de Vries ends up.

There is one thing I know.

Amber Tretter should be in the Miami Hall of Fame when her career is over.

She deserves it for her performance on the court already.

However, what really speaks volumes is she embodies what a true student-athlete is.

She clearly places importance on finishing her Architecture degree from Miami.

There are not many like her left in college basketball…or anywhere else.

Love and Honor, Amber!

Totally agree re Tretter- well said. I still believe there is more to the Singer story - was she given an opportunity to return to the team after entering the portal? In game situations she appeared to be really close with Box. She ran our offense and was all out on D. Butler makes no sense.

Wow. That’s great. She gets the opportunity to play at a high level for an historic program – and earn a globally recognized degree to take back to the Netherlands for her post-basketball career. If you can’t keep a player like that in this environment, you can at least show future recruits how much better their opportunities will be after playing at Miami.
