Akron is letting a random season ticket holder script their opening series against Robert Morris this year, a fair bit of media attention around it for the novelty. Fun way for the Zips to get some cash and publicity, though I’m hoping for the funny outcomes (opening drive leads to a defensive TD and the Zips lose by a single possession, or they score on the opening drive but get shut out the rest of the game).
It’s not about the outcome of that series. It just looks like they’re not taking the game nor their opponent seriously. I can’t imagine a P4 program would resort to this. I would hope Miami wouldn’t, either.
The last time I tried to sign up for a MAC-related promotion, I put in a request for 2 of the 150 feee tickets that “Coach Senderoff and players” were offering to everyone for January’s men’s basketball game at Kent. I wanted 2 empty seats to be courtesy of Morgan Safford. I did not “win.” But at least Kent lost.
Maybe not so stupid and embarrassing? I know some really dislike leaning into the MACtion sideshow/minor league baseball type vibe but its honestly the only real brand and differentiator for the MAC. It certainly gives us something that the Sun Belt doesn’t have. And whatever you think of Barstool and Big Cat, he’s always been very friendly in promoting the MAC. He’s been promoting and talking about this Akron thing on X and their shows.
I thought it was ridiculous but I heard the Akron coach explain it this morning on 923 radio in Cleveland and I understand it better. It seems to be working as intended
