What Needs to Happen ASAP

College agents are out of control, getting as much as 10-20% on college players. Pro agents get 3%, negotiated by the players union. With 100s of teams there’s little risk for agent to negotiate behind a player or teams back…so wouldn’t be surprised by this

=>I believe the standard for professional agents was 10% for marketing and 3% for contracts.

Isn’t Miami expected to have an increase in NIL for basketball as well, with rumors at $4-5 million? I don’t feel like looking back, but it was mentioned in the thread about football getting $8-10 million NIL.

If that number is factual and also correct, I would think the team should be able to keep everyone here, and probably have enough leftover to add a pretty good big man.

Thinking you don’t commit to building a $250M stadium to have guys like Brian Oddo be your starters…

I agree with most that Steele coming back is the first priority. If he can then get a Suder type leader on the team to commit to coming back, then I think you could have a huge amount of retention too. Not to mention if the NIL rumors are true, then that will help as well.

Getting a big man either in the portal or out of HS is going to be key. Need someone to defend and get after on the glass.

No, it was a comment hoping that an increase in football NIL meant a corresponding increase for basketball to 4-5 million.

Too bad. Thanks for clarifying.

In a world where numbers are so hard to get, we learned the neighborhood where a MWC team is competitive: 2.4 million. Its a big number and a big increase from where we are, but attainable goal. We don’t need a 10-20 million dollar roster. But as IU and UK proved this year, money doesn’t buy you the wins, its just table stakes to compete now.

That lets you keep a guy or two and fill in any holes formed by the guys you lose while keeping your contributors and role players happy.

Miami has 7 players returning who were in the rotation this season. I think keeping 4 of those would be a realistic goal, especially if they can add an experienced big. Wishful thinking?

I don’t think it’s hard hitting analysis to think Eian and Brant would be the targets to leave. Hopefully we have resources to match what they’d get.

I’d be very surprised if Luke, Kirby, Perry, or Ipsaro left. Evan coming off the injury and the MAC is the perfect level for the other guys. They should all find minutes and be effective at our level.

A large majority of these agents are in fact not agents. Not licensed as agents, not attorneys. I have a good friend that is a sports agent, and we have discussed this very topic. These kids need to be vetting their agents.

My guess is Elmer will command close to 1M. Byers 500K and up.

So many rumors and speculation on numbers on what guys are making, its hard to tell what’s real and what’s not to determine the market.

You are right though it will take a real step up in commitment to keep them. Obviously don’t know the guys at all, and Brant didn’t talk in pressers as much so don’t have a great feel on him, but Eian has given the impression he really loves Miami and I think if we can make it so it’s not insulting, we have a good chance at keeping him. Avila at SLU reportedly took less than market this year because of the team and coach.

Unlike football, guys like Elmer and Brant could have multi-year careers overseas making decent money, so its not like they have to fully cash in now or lose their earning protentional from basketball. Looking at players like Bramos and Hayes who were all MAC type players were able to have decade+ careers (wiki claims Kenny is still playing!)

I’ll say this: I was dreading portal season last year. Without having any insider access, I feel better about it this year but maybe that’s the difference between the gut punch of the 2025 MAC championship game and actually getting to the Dance.

Kenny has definitely filled up a passport.

Elmer may have cost himself some $$ on Friday.

Maybe. But he also earned money on Wednesday.

Someone from this run of teams might end up with their name in the rafters. If Elmer is a 4-year RedHawk from an undefeated team that helps lead us to back-to-back NCAA tourneys, I could see his #0 jersey retired proudly in our new arena.

Smooth player. Great range.

But…Friday. Wow. I’m assuming the multiple air balls were not entirely from tired legs, but more from the physical in-your-chest D.
