What is success?

Obviously, this is the best team we’ve had in a while, and we have a legit shot at going dancing this year. I know we’re all starving to make the Field of 68, but is it the NCAA Tournament or bust? What would make this season a success for you? 20 wins? Any postseason tournament bid?

12 mac wins and making the mac semis

Would mean our first 20+ win season this century and first MAC semis since before my freshman year. Yeah I’ll take that.

I think with how weak the MAC is we have to at least make the championship game

My preseason prediction was top 4. I wouldn’t be upset with that and multiple tourney wins. But success would be winning the regular season title and the tourney. I think that’s something the team is capable of if they can get it together for 40 minutes.

We are gonna win the MAC and get the bid.

That’s all.

Pick two:

  • Winning record
  • Top 4 in the MAC
  • MAC tournament semifinal

People might say I’m undershooting given how bad the conference is this season, but we haven’t done those things since 2009, 2011, and 2010.

Top 3 in MAC in regular season (oops…not a choice).
MAC tournament semis

Success is improving from last year and not loosing kids to the portal after the season ends

In the olden days…like 5 years ago, I’d have been happy this season with a top 3 MAC finish and conference tournament finals, knowing all important players had another year or two at Miami.

But today, teams turnover to such a high degree, nothing is guaranteed for next season. This team appears to be jelling. While it’s an unfair expectation, I’ll be disappointed with anything except postseason play, and consider success as top 2 in MAC regular season or conference tournament final.

I’d say 20+ wins and ANY post season. Small steps to rebuilding the program

At the beginning of the season I just wanted to be competitive. Fair or unfair, expectations obviously change and now I’d be really disappointed if we don’t hit at least 20 wins and a MAC semis. I can not believe we haven’t been to the semis since 2010 (I do because I’ve lived it but my god).

Putting this out there now because I don’t want the Kent game to influence me either way…

This team can absolutely win the conference and make the tournament.

Obviously, it won’t mean as much with the longer schedules today and non-D1 opponents, but we have a realistic chance to set the single-season wins record for Miami basketball. The record is 24 wins, accomplished three times (most recently in Wally’s senior season). We currently have 12. If we go 10-6 in our remaining conference games, win the MAC/SBC Challenge game, and make at least the MACC, we would get to 25 wins.

Yeah, ironically one of our best 5 teams ever (sweet 16 squad that beat defending national champ in first round) won only 19 games. (as noted they didn’t play as many games then). What is interesting is that we were ranked #19 in the final AP poll w a 19-9 final record.

Back to the present! How fun it is to have a competitive hoops program and a good Coach. Hope it is a bit of a catalyst to get that new arena built on campus quickly!

It’s a tough question. I’m just happy they’re playing good basketball. We haven’t had that in a long time.

The NIT getting rid of the autobids for regular season champions might actually bite us this year. That said, if we do get to 24 or 25 wins and lose in MAC title game, it could be possible to snag an NIT at large given that the College Basketball Crown tournament in Vegas is going to take 16 SEC/Big 10/Big East schools that otherwise would have been NIT at larges.

If that in fact happened, it would be a massive accomplishment, but I think it’s possible.

I thought the NIT rules changed again. Let me look for it

They did change, but it may or may not help us this year. You need an average ranking of 125 or better across a collection of computer polls to qualify as a regular season champion. Historically, the MAC champ would meet that. If Miami wins the MAC, it’ll be close. The home loss to Wright State hurts here.
