Western Michigan women at Miami Saturday

1:00, first game of a DH, one men’s or women’s ticket gives you admission to both games. Frisbee dogs at halftime of each game and Carnival on the Concourse for the kids starting at noon. Free tickets available, checkout MURedHawks.com. Both games are on ESPN+.

Western is 10-12 ( 5-6). Miami is 6-16 ( 3-8). One of our best games was a 64-50 win at Kalamazoo. Katey Richason was big in that game, but she has been out for 3 weeks now. Yesterday Western won 65-47 at NIU ( who had just beaten Ball State in their previous home game). Kaitlyn Zarycki had 26 points. We shut her down the first time we played them.

Zarycki is a GS transfer from Division II where she was a two time league POY. She is second in the MAC and 38th nationally in scoring at 19 ppg. Other starters yesterday included:
5-6 Nile Muguira Orbe from Spain, making her first start she had 11/6.
6-0 SR Hannah Spitzley 8.1ppg
5-7 SR Gabi Saxman 2.7/2.0
6-1 GS transfer Jasmine Elder 4/4.7
6-1 RS Soph De’Ahna Richardson comes off the bench but has averaged 13 points per game in her last 4 games and shoots a lot of 3’s.

Western is more of a defensive squad than an offensive one, they get lots of steals.

Probably we need to win our remaining home games to get to Cleveland, but the team has gotten noticeably better recently so that is doable. 6-1 Freshman Amber Tretter is on a 5 game double double run, averaging 17/12 over that span. 6-1 Sr Jaydyn Scott broke out of her slump Saturday, going for a career high of 27 points. Lately guards Cori Lard and Hennessey Luu-Brown have been consistent double digit scorers. I would hope Katey Richason and Lakresha Edwards should be close to returning from foot/ankle injuries.

Amber Tretter = MAC Freshman of the Year??

Miami wins pretty handily. 7 D1 wins now. It’s very possible we can beat last years win total if we stay hot and hot damn, I would not have thought that was possible given where the year started. This staff is top notch and congrats to the ladies. They are remarkably better.

Had a hard time scoring today, but got 7 in the 4th quarter to give her 10 points and a whopping 17 rebounds for her 6th consecutive double double.

Jaydyn Scott had 20 to go with the 27 she had against Georgia State, so safe to say her slump is over. Once again our starting guards Luu- Brown and Lard reached double figures. Today we had 26 turnovers, which was a regression and points out that Western plays very good defense. We had a difficult time finding open shots. Jada Scott fouled out and her minutes were limited and Maddie Huhn played almost as many minutes as she did. Other than that the rest of the bench played a total of 6 minutes. Our starters scored all but 1 point. Western shot below 30% on the game, so our defensive effort was good. It was 32-32 at the end of 3, so there was an offensive explosion in the 4th quarter compared to the rest of the game.
