Interesting comments. Certainly very complimentary of Miami but he said he would for sure have left in the transfer portal. Consider that he was Miami royalty and was dating his first wife at the time
Does it make sense that Miami students and to a lesser extent Miami U fund a minor leagues for the power 4?
I love Miami sports and I actually give a small amount to the red brick legacy but if Wally S has such an immediate reaction it does make me worry. Like we may never have a pro again that graduates from Miami
Oy. Eff this guy. His Dad basically promoted the crap out of him out of Long Island, he found 2 coaches at Miami that maximized his talent and gave him playing time, and paired him up with an experienced team of college veterans AND a great nucleus of young players with Mestas and Frierson.
Wally is lucky he got an offer from Miami when he did, otherwise he’d be working at LIU CW Post or Marist U.
Kevin Michale is who signed him at T-wolves,correct? $60 mill.?( pretty big $ back in the day.).
@Carm_in_San_Diego Yours is possibly the dumbest post ever. You don’t become an NBA player because your dad promoted you in high school. Wally worked hard and got better every year. He never misses an opportunity to promote Miami or to tell people how much he loved his years in Oxford.
You mad because he said he would take the NIL money if he could? So would plenty of former Miami players.
=>If someone would have offered me $100,000 to transfer to University of Cincinnati to be a dishwasher in their student cafeteria, I probably would have left Oxford and got a degree from UC.
Seriously.
If we become a program that develops good young guys and sends them off to big schools to get paid, while also bringing in older guys who couldn’t make it in the bigger conferences for whatever reason, we will win a lot of games in the MAC. To me it’s about taking advantage of the second year of a two year cycle where you manage to return a good chunk of your roster. That’s next season for us.
This is likely how we are positioning football and probably basketball and it was inferred by the Red Brick Legacy guys on that radio clip that was shared a few weeks ago.
As P5 schools prioritize proven college performers and top 300 in football/basketball coming out of high school. Miami can/should be grabbing the next layer of HS talent who want to play now and create the opportunity for the big pay day that we can’t offer or the P5 talent who have fallen out of favor because they were recruited over or missed their opportunity due to injury and want to play in a good situation.
It’s crucial we continue to invest in our staff that create and foster team culture and our facilities
Miami was one of Wally’s few options for D1 ball, and put him in a position to make him a really good player. My interactions with him during his Miami days were that he was very entitled and didn’t really want to be at Miami at all … even though w/out Miami he’d maybe be playing for a school like Marist, Quinnipiac, Albany, Niagara …
It’s cool that he made the pros, though.
I didnt have interactions with him but he does have a freshman daughter there so he must like it ok
Yeah, that’s a good point. I guess just label me as “Not A Wally Fan”, and YMMV.
I met Walt Sr., and he was a pretty cool guy.
I also gotta remember that this was about 30 years ago, which was wayyyyy in the past!
Who is Miami’s most well-known grad since Ben R.?
I’m thinking it’s Sean McVay, but just wondering if there are any others who I may not be thinking of…
Adam Eaton, Alec Martinez
Right now I would guess it is Brian Niccol.
Also body builder Sam sulek. Nearly 7 million followers on Instagram
Who were students since Ben? My guess would be Andy Greene or Sean McVay. Could see a case for Kate Voegele.
BTW, I’m seriously peeved that neither Mahaffey Jr or Harper Jr came to Miami. Legacy, dudes!!!

Horrendous take. Wally has done more for Miami than almost any other alum. Even 25 years after graduation, he is consistently talking about us on national TV and is wearing a Miami t-shirt on the DP show. If you listen to him in the above clip, it sounds like he chose Miami over several bigger programs so no he wouldn’t have ended up at a smaller program if Miami didn’t offer him.
Don’t hate on him for giving an honest answer about the transfer portal and NIL. If he lied and said “No, I would have turned down a bunch of NIL money and stayed at Miami” then he would lose credibility as everyone knows that’s a lie.
My recollection is that Wally S wasn’t really recruited at all, due to him playing in a kind of lightweight high school league on Long Island. It’s good that it worked out for him, though. Keep in mind, this was 30 years ago, so hopefully Miami can get another great addition to its list of alums … I think the most recent Miami guy making an impact in the pros was this back in 2021!
According to Wally himself, your recollection is dead wrong. He says in the above clip that he chose Miami over Harvard, NC State, Iowa and Siena. He also gives a lot of credit to having great coaches at Miami like Sean Miller, Thad Matta and Herb Sendek.
