Another class update from Sayler today: sounds like from talking with other ADs in conference we’re looking to add from FBS not FCS. Sorry to burst the bubble of all the SIU truthers
On the MAC board most of the discussion has centered around the names of Western Kentucky, Delaware(recently committed to CUSA, but might back out), or UCONN for football only.
I’ve definitely seen some FCS names thrown around at least. UConn will want to be a full member somewhere, no chance we get them. Delaware will sit in C-USA for at least a couple years. WKU and/or MTSU are the way
I think you meant UConn for FOOTBALL only. They’re not bringing a national championship hoops program to the MAC.
THE MAC is stepping it up even more I guess…
Realistically, since football pretty much dominates the scene, their men’s basketball (great) plus their football team (not so great) would be about an EVEN add to the MAC. The women’s basketball is where it would hurt UCONN since women’s hoops there has been elite.
UCONN is a bit of an odd ball as they are the only public school left in the Big East, but they will never be in the BIG10 and the ACC (unless it falls apart) will not want them either because football adds very little. Basketball is not driving the bus.
THE MAC should and could potentially grab TEMPLE (from AAC) and UCONN (FB INDY) in all sports with either ECU/WKU to make 16 - then grab 2-4 hoops schools of UCONNs choosing to appease them from the BIG EAST or A-10.
Football and BBall and Olympic sports would grow and be really solid from all schools.
But could you imagine if they did??
Temple is in an awful spot right now and I can’t see anyone leaving the American for the MAC. It’s just an all around better conference imo.
Yes - I don’t totally disagree but they are not near anyone. Fans cannot easily attend away games and AAC is NOT the new BIG10 with USC/UCLA/UW/UO with unlimited dollars.
No
A disparaging Temple U story…
I considered Temple (since the campus was less than two hours away). The summer of 74 (I believe), my parents and I drove for an unofficial visit to the campus. When we arrived to the campus (or practically right up to it), there were some kids (guessing ages about 14-19) playing dice games on both sides of us. They also barked a few words our way as well.
My Mom turned to my Dad, and said “Herb…Let’s get the hell out of here.” Exact quote.
We did. Never visited the campus.
Rough area.
Edit: Year. That’s all!
When my aunt went to Temple in the 70s, they had armed guards in the dorms.
Don’t need to be the Big 10, they’re pretty clearly the best G5 league for everything except basketball (MW). Comparing apples to apples
Temple has Navy and next season Army (for football only) both nearby, which is probably about as good as it’s going to get for Temple. Plus the media deal while nowhere near the P4 deals is a substantial amount that should keep them firmly at the top of the G5 (5-7 million supposedly).
Yes, that was a mistake. I will correct it.
