This day in Miami history

A beautiful Friday afternoon watching that game. I celebrated by meeting friends at the Montgomery Inn Boathouse for dinner that night.

I feel like I had to listen on the radio. Sat in the driveway to hear the end. Left work early as we were leaving for Vegas that night. Watched them beat Utah in the Sportsbook at Bellagio. One of my best weekends ever!

I had forgotten only three players scored for Miami in the first half. Frierson and Estick the others.

Two observations. First, the overall physique of the Miami players on that team is so much more impressive than today’s team. And: Kent State was playing in the tourney at the same time as the Miami game. Was that the last time the MAC was a two-bid league?

I saw that in the score highlights as well and wondered the same thing.

With respect to your first point, a few years earlier Miami played Clemson in the NCAA tournament and lost in the first round. A co-worker of mine who didn’t follow Miami sports asked me the next day in so many words, “How many of Miami’s players are upperclassmen? Not in terms of skill but in terms of physique, Clemson looked like grown men playing against boys.” And they really did. Just a few years later you had the team we see in the video above.

I hope it’s safe to say that 2 years from now Smith, Morris and Mabry will look a lot different than they do right now in terms of physical development.

They beat us in MAC championship…Wally had banged up knee…rehabbed and played NCAA tourney …pretty sure he had a lateral release surgery afterwards.

PS feel like there was a more recent two-bid, not sure.

Miami really needs to change that “men vs boys” narrative. I watch these games on tv and the guys shooting free throws have “biceps”. And “deltoids”. We need more biceps and deltoids. That’s my take.

Well, you should hear how the last few staffs have handled nutrition along with S&C. Not exactly a surprise we’ve been missing bulk. There’s a reason it keeps getting mentioned as a priority by the current staff and why Steele has already pushed for some big changes there.

Does anyone know where I could watch the MU-Utah game?

On CBS, Wally picks Kent as the lower seeded team to watch. Says Senderoff was his grad assistant at Miami.

They get the Hoosiers…Kent played Charleston, Zags and Houston close, no reason they cant get it done…just need to control IUs big man.

PS X and NKU in…some day, I guess sucks is still spelled with UC. LOL.

I watched it in Washington State! I had watched the Huskies beat us soundly in football and basketball previously. Revenge was sweet!

Senior year Spring Break was watching it at home. 4’10" roommate ran into Wally that next week in the Upham hallway. She still remembers that we were more concerned about Wally’s knee than her when she told us.

Please, share the story. This is very new news to me

Saying they “handled” strength and nutrition is generous because it suggests they did anything about it, is the short version. Our freshmen look small because freshmen look small. Our upperclassmen look small because of a lack of emphasis on that.

Apparently Herb Sendek wasn’t big on the strength piece of the equation either, but when Charlie Coles took the reigns, he allowed the players to lift/bulk up. Remember the transformation that took place with Szczerbiak between his soph and junior seasons, going from a skinny kid to a full blown monster.

The Motor City Bad Boys beat the shit out of Michael Jordan for a few years before he decided to get serious about strength and nutrition. After that, he became an unstoppable force.

We stayed to watch the postgame celebration on Saturday night, and I was surprised to see that former Miami assistant and ( Kent and OU head coach Jim Christian) was announced as an assistant of some sort with the Kent team this year.
