After our chatter about the offense, they made one run stand up last night. I caught most of the ninth inning while the Detroit-Baltimore game was in inning breaks and a pitching change. Apparently, the difference between giving up a game-winning homer and finishing off a complete game shutout is about five feet.

I see the team coming together after suffering just a ton of injuries. Offensively, we no longer have any minor league guys on the roster, which allows platooning and Pinch hitting to get people in the best matchups. Looking at who we have in the back end of the bullpen, those 3 guys are all exceeding greatly expectations and have kind of grown into their role. We still have 3 major league players out with injury in Hayes, Candelario, and Marte, and the big worry is Hunter Greene, will he be back this year, and if so when. Optimism should be much higher after the last couple of weeks.
Amazing how quickly things can change. Reds and Dodgers have both gone 8-2 in their last 10. Dodgers have pulled away from the Padres and Giants and the Reds have caught up to the Cardinals and Brewers and now clearly have the struggling Padres in their sites. As I said in my last post, things are coming together nicely.

Well, I’m back from Europe and it appears we are still just about .500. Haven’t been following the scores so maybe we’ve played better than the record. Or not as it’s the same as when I left.

Bullpen blew a lead in the 9th Saturday so could have been a series win.
Had 5-2 lead in the 8th on Saturday, both Santillan and Pagan gave up runs. Ended a very nice streak of winning series:

And yet the schedule gets tougher with Yankees, Padres, RedSox, then Phillies. Would be nice if Hays (.901 ops) and Marte (.857 ops in 72 PA) could return from rehab assignments this week. Probably looking at another month without Hunter Greene.
Candelario activated. Don’t know if he will help or not. He was not good last year but was good the year before in Washington which is why we signed him. 3B has been a weak spot.
Well, I guess the answer is “will not”. Reds DFA’d Candelario a few minutes ago.

Ha, as horrible as Candelario was in 2024, he still went 8-for-22 (.364) with a 2b, 3b, and 2 HR versus San Diego.
There are guys who aren’t stars that you see come up against you and say “this guy kills us” and he’s towards the top of that list for me

One of the biggest bust FA signings for sure. However, will give them some credit for eating the money and letting him go. I thought for sure they’d call him up and let him struggle for a month before making that decision

Marte moved up to AA in his rehab and should be back soon and hopefully take over as the every day 3B.
Looking at recent trade target rumors and there’s not a ton of attractive outfielders out there to fill up RF but there’s two blasts from the past having solid seasons that could be attractive targets for the Reds in Geno Suarez and Aroldis Chapman. Both are free agents next year so shouldn’t command a huge prospect return for either. Geno could split time at DH and 3B and take CES’s spot on the roster if he continues to struggle. He would likely be a good mentor for Marte as well.
