Steele extended

I too thought it was a bit premature…wait until we can see the final results of the season. But I also see the perspective of being able to lock him in now as he likely will be in high demand. NIL has completely changed the college recruiting landscape, and I think Steele adjusted well this year with landing Woolfolk, Craft, and Suder (Luers not so much). And his team this year has been absolutely fun to watch.

Completely agree. Knows how to build a staff and more importantly, can recruit. Great contract!

I understand the sentiment, but don’t think it’s entirely fair. Luers could be a great addition for team-building and culture-setting which can pay dividends behind the scenes. Don’t mind filling the bottom third of a roster with local kids in his mold.

Coach May actually like it at Miami,as apparently does Chuck Martin.
Miami has figured out it’s cheaper to pay good coaches than to keep re-shuffling the deck.

Steele has very strong ties to SW Ohio. Obviously he was at X, but his wife is also from the area and they seem to have strong roots and a commitment to staying in the area (and money isn’t a huge factor due to family wealth).

As long as Miami shows commitment to hoops like with the new arena, I could definitely see Steele staying even with great success and building something special. I could also see him moving up if the job is right, but I think due to his unique family circumstances, he isn’t looking for any high level job and the paycheck that brings. The new job would have to be a great fit for him to move on.

How exactly is this unfair?

We grabbed Steele at exactly the right time and place as his X gig came to an end. His family ties to the great city of Cincinnati is probably THE key factor in him accepting the position and now agreeing to an extension. He has been a bargain for Miami… A battle tested HC from a power program who exudes strength and confidence. We are fortunate to have him at the helm!

I thought I explained it pretty well in my quoted post.

But to expand, I’d ask if you know the role Leurs was brought in to fill? If you don’t, I think it’s not fair to label his addition a mistake or miss. My $0.02.

Leurs was voted as a team captain. He has been in a couple of times with the game on the line, but his real role is leadership and toughness. We started the year with 10 guys in the rotation and have dropped it to 9. The guys who are not in the rotation still have a big effect on the team. From all indication, Leurs has been a perfect fit. If you have 13 good players all expecting to play, you are going to have some unhappy campers and a big negative for a team.

He has been mediocre, especially compared to the other transfers. I hoped for more output from a 5th year senior than:
3.7 ppg
2nd to last in FT% (not including Anderson)
11th in REB/G
12th in STLs

I have a feeling these are wasted words. The coach goes out of his way to compliment Dan Luers at every step about his leadership. He was voted a team captain. The team is 15-5 and 7-1 in the league- the best season in 15 years.

If you asked me right now would I rather Dan Luers or Anderson Mirambeaux on this team I would pick Luers

I am not a big fan of bashing our student athletes on this site. If one has a bad game or a down streak, perhaps simply acknowledge it and then back off. The kids know when they’re in a funk without us rubbing it in. All our kids are in Oxford for a reason. Their coaches believe they belong there.

When I coached girls high school soccer, the “last” player selected for varsity was chosen as much for their attitude and teamwork as for their ability. Needed someone who was okay with rarely seeing the field. Seems to me Luers is as big a part of this team as anyone.

I’m starting to think this is a Jack Owens burner.

Great contract extension (hopefully for both sides) and a new (hopefully showcase) Hoops Arena to follow! All good!

For the love of God though, leave the refs alone. I guess you can walk the tightrope, but one of these games it will bite you.
