Stadiums...facilities

Thank you. I don’t think this is widely known/understood. While there are many arguments about where the new arena should go, it is clearly needed.

Well written, well said.

The “necessity” of a new arena is predicated on the accuracy of the cost to maintain the current facility and whatever the true costs will prove to be to build a new one.

Let me be clear. A few years ago I would have been beating the drum about the way a new facility would be desireable. I strongly believed it would change the trajectory of the basketball programs and, by extension, serve the interests of the university.

I am less convinced now and feel the loss to the institution of a superior multipurpose facility may have been understated.

In other news, Texas Tech spent $242 million to build the largest contiguous football facility in the world. I think it is over 300,000 square feet.

@MiamiJohn We no longer have a “…superior multipurpose facility”. We have an outdated, leaky, drab hulk on the outskirts of campus that has outlived its usefulness. No matter how often you post your opposition and admittedly uninformed speculation about the costs the new arena is going to be built.

Do we have a single coach in any sport that’s older than millett? I think that should be cause for demolition alone.

A chlorine leak? Is there a hidden swimming pool in that thing?

Millet never ceases to amaze.

Yes, the senior administrators have a nice spa in the basement with hot tub and massage tables. You and I would never be invited of course.

So… yeah, the appearance of chlorine in the water only tells us its treated water and not natural ground water seeping up.

According to Wikipedia Coach Martin is about 10 months older

As long as Chuck Martin isn’t leaking chlorine I’m good with him staying on.

This chlorine riddle has me more convinced than ever strange things are afoot beneath Millett. A number of years ago, I first broke the story (on this board fyi) that Millett was a time portal and somehow connected to The Cosmic Room at Wright Patterson. There were obvious signs when The Weathers Brothers never aged and played for like 6 schools, but I digress. I didn’t see any good benefit of it all to MU until it occurred to me recently that coach Steele had found 1998 all over again and that he’d been using the portal to funnel that 90’s magic to this team. Thus my conclusions: We are going to the show. Millett is apparently a superfund/star gate. And I admire you and all the good you bring to our school.

I will miss the Terrazo on the concourse. Also, the black backgrounds look supernatural in still shots. But of course they do! Because we all know…

Millett would make a great setting for a Twilight Zone movie.

MJ:
It’s an accurate estimate to update because Millet was built pre-ADA act. Needs accessibility, ramps, elevators, restrooms, parking,on and on.

The place people play pick up basketball now is at the rec, which is still easily accessible for students. Replacing Cook Field with the current Millett location drastically reduces accessibility for students.

Drastically?

Hahne: 9 mins to Millet, 15 mins to Cook
Dennison: 18 min to Millet, 8 min to Cook (although its taking you to far side, so depends which side…its close to Cook)
Porter: 23 min to Millet, 15 min to Cook
Heritage Commons: 28 min to Millet, 20 min to Cook.
(These times all assume the new rec fields would be as far back from the street as Millet would, so may even shave a minute or two off them).

And if you live anywhere off campus, they are basically a wash. Many of the Greek houses which are heavy intramural participants are closer to Millet in fact.

How is the rec “easily accessible” to Dennison and Hahne when its farther than Millet would be for rec fields?

The “easily accessible” rec is 13 minute walk from Elliot. The “drastically reduced accessibility” Millet is 13 minute walk from Elliot.

Having to go to Millett rather than Cook Field is an extra 28 minutes round trip from my freshman dorm, an extra 42 minutes round trip from my sophomore dorm, and an extra 12 minutes round trip from my junior dorm. All of the dorms I lived in are within 15 minutes of the Rec and the SW campus location.

Except for the unlucky few living in the extreme north end of campus in Flower Hall etc, Millett is way less convenient for activities and is not an option for just casually getting outside and hanging out.

The idea that the millet area is so far is ridiculous. Students literally have to park their cars there they are going there anyways. Also if you are going to cook to exercise you can deal with an extra 10 mins each way of walking

Did you just say Elliot? Elllllllioooot…

I loved my two years at Elliott.

Water-bombing the Greek floats, hosting a live campus show (out the window) every day, and enjoying the close-nit atmosphere were just three advantages.
