I wanted to bring attention to this play, which might get overlooked in all the highlights. There was a play where Luke drove to the mid lane just inside the FT line and then dished out to his left to Kirby who nailed a three. What was impressive here is how Luke threw the pass and led Kirby to an open area where Kirby could just catch and shoot. Like a QB anticipating a WR before the WR gets to the spot. Watch the Miami highlights for this.
The thing about Kirby is that it just looks like he’s having so much fun out there on the court, as if he’s just playing a pick up game at the local rec center.
Last August Dick and I went to the last practice of the summer. We wanted to see Atlason and the freshmen, especially Trey Perry who was the most hyped of the freshmen. After watching them scrimmage we agreed that Kirby stood out, he was so quick and athletic.
If Kirby sticks around (or even if he doesn’t) he has a chance to be special. His combination of length, athleticism, and shooting are rare. He was basically gliding on that dunk in the first half.
And to be clear, this post was really moreso about Luke’s pass than Kirby’s three, but yes, that was an outstanding shot in rhythm as well.
As much as losing Ipsaro sucked, one area I would say Skaljac is an upgrade in is playmaking. Evan is an incredible straight-line driver/finisher and mid-range shooter, but I think Skaljac is a better pure passer. His creativity and vision have been a revelation since he’s become a full-time starter.
I can’t be sure of course, but my guess is that Luke made eye contact with Justin right before he made that pass, so Justin knew to be prepared.
I am going to throw some love to Miami WBB. Watch the eye contact between Tamar Singer and Amber Tretter, and Tamar Singer and Ilse Devries. I have seen it several times this year. Thing of beauty to watch these ladies work together.
