SEC moves to 9 game conference schedule in 2026

There will be a lot of FBS teams looking for games the next few seasons. Many SEC teams have four OOC games scheduled over the next couple of years. By my count 17 games will need to be rescheduled or canceled.

CFP also looking to incorporate a new SOS metric that may benefit the SEC more than the other conferences. Also an interesting way to look at SOS:

Unlike basketball, I’m not too concerned about CFP methodology…there will never be more than 1 G5 team and its so rare that that the motivating factor for scheduling will always be economic rather than SoS concerns.

What does start to concern me is that as the last few power conferences go to 9 (with ACC likely to follow suit shortly) and with the SEC already requiring at least 1 OOC game against a power team, at what point does the FBS division just de facto separate between power and others due to scheduling?

SEC now mandates 10 of 12 games against power teams (9 SEC + 1 other power required).

There will always be demand for OOC home games so I don’t think others will totally be shut out, but the illusion that the MAC is playing in the same division as Big/SEC is continuing to crumble.

The same scenario will apply to hoops,no doubt. And on and on.

Kent State’s 2026 game with Kentucky has been moved to 2030. There was a clause in the contract that triggered the reschedule if the SEC went to 9 games.
