Ah. It’s been a long time. I remember Tates taking the job at Clemson after Miami and then a controversy involving a Clemson cheerleader. He was indeed an intense guy! After that I don’t have any recollection of him.
Locke left Clemson due to an NCAA investigation into his giving money to Moses Malone and providing cars for Clemson players. I can’t find any reference about Coach Locke and cheerleaders.

Maybe I’m confused or maybe it was something that came up at Miami. He wrote a book about screwing things up. Maybe it’s in there.

I found a comprehensive SI article about Tates. I think the scandal I thought involved a cheerleader might have been the questionable decision mentioned in this article. He apparently dated an undergrad student at Jacksonville while he and his wife were separated and he was coaching there.
