There may be a difference of opinion of it being “too soon”/“not enough time has passed” but will Miami do anything next year to remember Charlie? He made a profound impact at Miami and this would honor/celebrate the 20th anniversary of him being named Miami’s head men’s hoops coach. Any thoughts?
I was really, really worried this would go another direction with people named Charlie in the news today.
Good idea however. Steele seems like the kind of guy who would like it.
The 1996-1997 season was the first time Charlie became Head Coach, so more like 29 years.
Oh wow! I was told there would be no math …
Did Miami honor him at all for the 20th or 25th? Charlie didn’t win a National Championship but he was a GREAT asset to Miami, an outstanding coach and an overall wonderful person. I’d love to see him be recognized more…
Strange timing for a “Remembering Charlie” post followed by “too soon”/“not enough time has passed.”
Regardless..Coach Coles was a great ambassador for Miami. The Press loved him and his press conferences.
Jazz’s speech below:
I would say your timing is really, really unlucky or really, really clever and shitty, but I enjoy your posts so I believe the former.
yeah, it’s bad timing. I was just thinking that this was the first time in over a decade that I’m really looking forward to Miami MBB … and the last time was with Charlie as HC.
Miss that guy. He deserves to be remembered as a Miami legend.
Jazz is currently studying law at Washington University. I was asked to speak to her about Wash U Law before she started, and I don’t think Jazz will object to my sharing this. Very nice young lady.
I believe there’s been a “Charlie Coles Day” the past few years for MBB games, so they are doing a good job of remembering and honoring him.
I would also suggest the title of this thread be modified ![]()
Holy moly, it looks from her LinkedIn like she’ll be headed to my old firm in Minneapolis after she graduates.
Frankly … I’d like to see the MAC and Miami co-ordinate in honoring Coles in some meaningful way. Yes, he was a great coach/ambassador for Miami. But he was also a great ambassador/spokesman for the entire league.
I honestly don’t believe their has been a coaching ‘face’ of MAC basketball since Coles. And that is no small loss.
Hey, is the court at Millett named after anyone?
I thought mollautt was dropping a bag of money on the new arena project so we could name it Coles Field House.
I would humbly suggest if you are thinking about naming it Coles Court that you consider Coles/Hedric Court or Hedric/Coles Court. Darrell Hedric is a Miami HOF who won 216 games with a .579 winning percentage. And Darrell still attends games at age 92. Honor them both.
I spoke with Coach Hedric three weeks ago at our home football game.
I have made this joke here before, but if any basketball court is named after Charlie Coles, it should be the one at Western Michigan.
Charlie Coles Court at Hedric Fieldhouse.
I would name the arena after Coles, as he shined as both a player and a coach for Miami. I would put Wally and Harper’s name on the two baselines. I would Hedricks name on the sideline in front of the Miami bench.
It’s a pipe dream, I’m sure. But I like it.
Considering the cash we need to raise for everything, the arena and court are going to the highest bidder if I had to guess.
