Kent is a somewhat disappointing 11-5, only 2-2 in the league. 5-2 at home. Sr. F vonCameron Davis leads with16ppg. Sr.C Cli’Ron Hornbeak has 7 rebounds a game and a silly name. JJ Sullinger had a career high 32 pts.Tuesday in a loss to Western Michigan. Kent gave up 94 points.
The notable alumni list is a veritable classic rock playlist, though one wonders who actually graduated. Joe Walsh, Chrissie Hynde, Mike “We Are Devo” Mothersbaugh. Also B&B host Nick Saban, conservative commentator Lou Holtz, and “He is Batman”, Michael Keaton.
Computer picks Kent by ~3. That said, it does show Kent plays significantly worse in faster-paced games. This might be a battle of who can own the tempo. It also hasn’t accounted for Safford’s injury.
Huge game. Even though they’ve had a rough start, Kent is the first real MAC contender we have played. Going to be a tough game on the road, but should show us where Miami is truly at in the league.
The Net Rankings currently have Akron (120), Miami (140), Kent (145), and Ohio (147) followed by a huge gap to the 5th place team Toledo (211).
I watched a replay of the Western Michigan win at Kent on Tuesday. Western’s guards just drove into the paint time and again and if they did not score or get fouled they would get the offensive rebound ( 14 offensive rebounds).
Kent’s huge center Hornbeak had 17 point and 5 or 6 dunks, but amazingly had no rebounds. There are a lot of similarities in the scoring game of Cam Craft and small guard Jaylen Sullenger for Kent. Sullenger came into the game on a 1 for 19 three point shooting run, then went 8 for 12 on treys and had 32 points. They both can hit the 3 pointers while flying through the air or fading away and shoot up to 35 to 40 feet out sometimes. Really, without Safford they did not have the toughness to battle Western. Obviously, this did not look like the Western team we played.
We beat them at Kent last year, should be able to do it again. They lost to both Ball State and Western at home since Safford went out.
I’m very interested to see how Woolfolk and Potter do in the paint in upcoming games, both offensively and defensively. Hornbeak and Davis are both very active inside. I see Akron outscored OU 48-22 tonight in the paint. It’s crucial Miami’s big guys stay out of foul trouble.
