Portal and Texas Tech

While Reggie Virgil made some great money, his playing time could be limited with this report of Micah Hudson (former 5 star) coming back to TT from A&M plus TT had their 2 other starters back already.

Does anyone really care about Texas Tech? In the pecking order of Texas football, it seems like it’s

Texas
Texas A&M
Baylor
TCU
Houston
Texas Tech
SMU
Rice
UNT

Cody Campbell cares a lot about Texas Tech football and just sold his business for $4B. TT and SMU can go toe to toe with anyone moneywise.

PORTAL TALE OF WOE. I’ve talked about family member who was Bobcats full ride for 5 years. Was buddies with Rourke who went to Indiana for $750k plus place to stay and job for fiance. One of his roommates was a tight end who went to Oklahoma State. Both were at his wedding this month. The TE had a NIL agreement for $250,000 for the year. He started 2 or 3 games and got hurt. By the time was healed and ready to play their season had gone down the tubes. He was told they were going to play the younger guys and get them ready for a reboot for '25. Sat the bench rest of the season. When he went to collect his NIL check he got a check for $30,000!!! Nothing in writing, no negotiations, no nothing but a big screw job. Wonder how many other kids wind up in the same boat. Maybe that’s why he’s coming back?

Yeah, good point, they won’t be hurting for donations. It’s just that TTU is among the Big XII denizens of K-State, OkSt and KU, which don’t really have a huge draw outside of their general vicinities.

I’m still holding on to the belief the big College Football powers will enter into a hybrid of LIV Golf and English Premier League footie, and “the rest of us” will have the scraps – and that will actually be kind of fun!

Yeah, that’s something to think about. I don’t want to name names, but there were some Ohio State and Notre Dame QBs in the 90s who just weren’t up to snuff and got benched. (I’m now a Bears fan, and remember the hue and cry from Oklahoma fans about benching QB1 Spencer Rattler for Caleb Williams, so naming names in this case bc they both play pro ball).

What does the team do if boosters invest a million bucks in an 18 year old guy who can’t perform at a FBS-level? Or gets hurt and the season falls apart? Pro-rate the payment? Not pay him next season?

This is the key to your entire post. Shouldn’t there be a contract for NIL deals?

That is on the player.

Id think that schools would love a written contract, but the shady boosters would hate it

TTU was ranked with the #1 portal class when I checked 247 last week (we were 1st in the MAC). Never underestimate the power of a rich Texan who doesn’t care about burning cash if it helps them win.

That would suck for Reggie with only one year remaining.

It’s rampant.

I was surprised there was nothing in writing and pay day came at the end of the season. Shady boosters taking advantage of unsuspecting college kids for sure. Knew from day 1 they were going to F him if he didn’t work out. There was another portal kid on the team that got the same screw job.

No idea if other portal deals get written down or not. Anybody out there in portal land have any idea?

Just one more case where the grass isn’t always greener on the other side.

A Miami portal recruit from last year mentioned they didn’t get paid by UTSA, along with a teammate. There’s so many things wrong with the current system. The “agents” are just friends who don’t know what they’re doing. A lot of funds are run by fans and they’re committing to spend before they’ve fundraised.

Wow, what a sh*tty thing to do.

“Yeah, come play at State U and you’ll get PAID! We got the dollars for you!”

Kid isn’t a good match for the program.

“Here’s $300. F*ck off.”
