PG Play

There is no doubt that losing Evan Ipsaro for the rest of the year was a huge blow for our team.

As Coach Steele has stated, Evan was on a trajectory to a Mid Major All American year.

However, I don’t think Luke Skaljac has gotten enough credit for his play this year especially stepping in as the starting PG with Evan out.

At this point, Luke has logged 371 total minutes for the year compared to 336 for Evan.

Luke has 61 assists vs. 39 for Evan. .164 per minute Luke vs. .116 for Evan.

Luke has a 3.21 A/TO ratio compared to the 2.60 that Evan had.

Luke is shooting .409 from 3pt to .394 for Evan.

Steals per minute–Luke .0485 vs. Evan .0476

Free throw pct–Luke .808 vs. Evan .824

Where Evan really excelled this year is that he was shooting .571 from the field compared to Luke’s .404. This appears to be a reflection of a better mid-range game and the ability to drive to the basket and finish better than Luke.

This is also reflected in the fact that Evan got to the FT line almost twice as much as Luke has (51 vs. 26).

Losing Evan has hurt but we very fortunate to have someone like Luke who has been able to step in and step up in the way that he has.

I am looking forward to seeing how his game further develops during the course of the year.

However, he deserves a lot of credit for what we have accomplished this year.

Trey needs to step it up. He is aggressive still which is great, but doesn’t really make the best plays/decisions thus far. Hope he gets there because even 10 minutes a game of solid backup PG play can be huge for this team.

Luke is doing a fine job. In all facets. The only negative is right now, after Luke, and with Evan out, and Perry not yet showing he is ready, Luke will have to shoulder the majority of the load at PG. Suder can play PG as well, but Luke is clearly superior at the position. With Luke and Evan we had the top PG rotation in the MAC. Without Evan we still have a top 5 PG in the MAC, just much less depth behind him.

Going into this season I thought Luke was just a dead eye shooter (which is still good!). Hes a legit MAC guard and he’s still young. Evan’s leap to mid major all American was my biggest surprise of the year, but Luke’s play is probably my second. He’s been very impressive for someone who got very limited time last year so is seeing his first real minutes.
