Quote from Sayler that really sums it all up: “What I’ve told everybody is, ‘I don’t know that it’s going to work or we’re going to get exactly where we want to go, but I know if we don’t try, we won’t.’”
It’s remarkable the kind of press Miami has received this year for positive on/off field reasons after being less than irrelevant for years before the Finn incident last fall.
The article stole a win from the men’s bball team. That is what you get when a BG grad writes the article.

Everyone drink your Starbucks this morning.
A great and informative article in a huge national publication such as the New York Times is never a bad thing. If you can, please comment on the article in the comment section to show there is interest among Miami fans in moving forward and upward.
Great article and I have to laugh at Rick Chryst being such a big cheerleader for us as I’m not sure there was ever a single positive word written about him on MHT when he was commissioner…
“we are very much like Virginia Tech, Syracuse, Georgia Tech, Wake Forest or Duke, in terms of the size and the kinds of things that we offer academically”
lolnope
How would you suggest we try to appeal to the ACC vmjohn? Certainly Duke and GA Tech are amazing academic schools but Syracuse cant even fill their admissions anymore.

This would be where Miami makes its move
Syracuse and Wake Forest* Total Cost of Attendance
(* if you are a NC resident making <$200K, tuition is free but the rest of the stuff is about $30K)
| Syracuse (on campus) | Wake Forest | |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition | $69,180 | $71,894 |
| Housing & food | $20,580 | $20,296 ($12,900 + $7,396) |
| Books, fees, travel, personal | $5,916 | $6,540 |
| Total COA | $95,676 | $98,730 |
No wonder why they’re having a problem getting kids!
Syracuse isn’t elite, and I can’t speak to any recruitment struggles they may or may not have. What they do have is an acceptance rate a bit below 50% and an average freshman SAT a hundred points higher than Miami. Their endowment is twice the size of Miami’s, but since they’re private, I’d give Miami the edge there. Not an elite school on the level of Duke but also not one that Miami should so easily dismiss.
I honestly forgot all about Finn ![]()
The idea of conference realignment being motivated by academics or anything other than US legal tender is a fiction 20 years out of date. The decisions these conferences make will be fully decided by what will result in the most financial success for the conference.
I think Sayler has correctly identified that our best chance to a successful upgrade is with a giant bag of cash as part of the joining fee. We don’t carry our metro market, we don’t have a huge base of student or alumni support. What we do have is a collection of rich people willing to fill a briefcase full of cash. Have to play to your strengths.
Well, we beat em in Oxford back in 07. Kokal threw a bunch of picks, but we still hung on for a close win. At one point, the Orange Man mascot was dancing around in the endzone, so I called Swoop over and pointed it out. I told him, “hey, that dopey orange is showing you up, swoop! What are you gonna do about it?” Swoop in turn tackled him, and a hilarious mascot fight ensued. That was my positive contribution that day, as everyone got a good laugh out of it.
I also contributed negatively however, by insulting the Syracuse kick return man who was about 5ft, 7inches tops. I really let into him after he bobbled one, and eventually he lost his temper and had to be restrained by his teammates. Those were the days when the student section was behind the visitors bench. Oh, to be a drunk idiot college kid again. Ah, memories…
+football. But US legal tender can help you buy a good football team. So yes.
Worked for SMU.
If you want to get into one of the power conferences, academic standing is important. Every B10 school admitted was an AAU member, and the ACC schools are all highly rated academically as well. It was speculated that Boise State’s poor academic ranking was what kept it out of the PAC10 back when it was still a real conference.
Excellent article - President Crawford and David S are two of the few people at Miami that continue to have vision beyond the reach of the Oxford city ( town ) limits- Great Miami ofcoverage by the NYT. I would also add Travis and the basketball leadership to great long range vision for Miami.
I wouldn’t classify Louisville as highly rated in anything relating to academics.
You tell him Willy Wonka called and he needed to get back to the chocolate factory as soon as the game was over?
