NIU game

I am not saying this is the reason we lost, but one issue is we have a “look to score first” PG as opposed to one looking to facilitate others. That also leads to issues when Lairy is dribbling away signficant time on the clock and/or dribbling into traffic, looking to generate his own offense. I guess a problem when your PG is also arguably your best scoring option.

I think this is the biggest issue with this team, but I don’t want to make it sound like the issue is Lairy as an individual. Right now, Lairy is the only player talented enough to get his own shot whenever he wants, but this is his first time being the go to guy. Before, he always had Sibande, Grant, or Brown and he could be the second guy. Now that we’re in the first year with a new coach, Lairy all the sudden is that guy. It’s a learning experience for him and I don’t think he’s found the balance yet.

I don’t think the PG being the top scoring option is an issue. Carry runs the point for Kent most of the time, but he’s surprisingly pass first, which forces teams to help less. I think Lairy needs to pick up on the fact that the games we do well in, he scores most his points in the second half because he spent the first half driving and dishing.

IMO, the other issue is he struggles 1:1 defensively. He’s quick, but with his size, he really struggles to alter shots or stop drives. So when his man gets deep, Mirambeaux has to help. And while Mirambeaux has quick feet, he’s not fast and it starts a chain reaction where everyone is scrambling. I think the size in the '23 class will really help this team take a big step forward (as much as a bunch of freshmen can help).

I thought a lot about this on the way home. I think you’re both correct. There are too many times when Mekhi has the ball that the other players seem to stand around waiting to see what he’s going to do. Not what you want from a point guard. And he’s just too darn short to make a lot of the shots he tries to make inside. He got blocked easily several times.

I don’t think his height is the issue. Bugsy did pretty well in the league. I think it might just be adjusting to a new role. He is talented and smart. Guy will get there. We just gotta stay in the top 8 to get into the tourney and then all bets are off.

I hope he ends up somewhere great. MB is my all time favorite b-ball player.

Earl Boykins was the MAC equivalent.
