NIL GROUP OF 6

Open Endorse just released a report on NIL impact. Here are some interesting numbers from the report when it comes to roster cost for average G6 NIL annual earnings by position:

QB-406K

RB-204K

WR-220K

TE-123K

OL-231K

DL-233K

LB-222K

DB-199K

Specialist-76K

These numbers are not for per position group, but rather per player per position in each group.

G6 starters land in the 78th percentile of earnings in football.

Obviously the numbers are much higher for the P4 schools. For example, QB is 3M. RB is 620K. As just 2 examples.

Very interesting numbers!

How close do you think our guys are to these numbers? What do you think the whole team is per year? How sure are you of these numbers?

I don’t think our guys are getting anywhere near these amounts. Also, P5 teams are also doing revenue sharing, which can increase how much players make even more.

These are football operating budgets for FY 2024 per Extra Points Library, just a sample. Note: these figures do not include roster player payroll. These were compiled from FOIA requests to the various public institutions.

University of Alabama

$113,835,360

Texas A&M University, College Station

$90,797,514

University of Washington

$87,566,951

University of Nebraska-Lincoln

$84,059,267

The Ohio State University

$78,586,384

University of Tennessee, Knoxville

$75,905,015

University of Michigan

$72,404,170

University of Georgia

$68,931,272

Clemson University

$67,787,017

University of Texas at Austin

$65,770,599

Pennsylvania State University

$64,463,970

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, New Brunswick

$64,414,464

Indiana University, Bloomington

$61,588,425

Florida State University

$61,109,773

Auburn University

$60,851,540

University of Oklahoma

$60,534,764

Michigan State University

$58,600,073

University of Mississippi

$57,122,596

University of Arkansas, Fayetteville

$57,117,596

University of Iowa

$55,519,659

I look at these numbers, particularly the G6 NIL annual earnings numbers by position, and realize that probably half (if not more) of the MAC will be dropping football in the next 5 years if something doesn’t change.

It is not a sustainable model in any way, shape or form for the G6 schools. Especially when you factor in roster payrolls and the portal. At the very least there needs to be some sort of compensation to the schools that lose players to the portal, similar to the compensation system in professional athletics. Obviously you can’t award draft picks, so it would have to be monetary. How that would work, I have no idea. I have long advocated, and will continue to do so, that the G6 break away from the P4. It is a farce to claim this is an even playing field.

I believe a fair and reasonable compensation system would call for monetary reimbursement of the total amount of scholarship money a school spent on developing a player who moved up (not down) via the transfer portal. For example, Texas Tech should reimbursement Miami for the three scholarships it spent on developing Reggie Virgil.

You can’t help but feel bad for A&M

Happens all the time in professional soccer: the transfer fee. Basically the new club pays old club a fee for releasing its player before his contract ends. Importantly, this isn’t simply a buyout of the player’s contract. It also includes factors like how good the player is now, how good he’ll be in the future, etc. Since soccer doesn’t exactly have minor leagues (not counting major clubs’ academy teams that scout young teens), transfer fees are what ultimately fund the entire professional development system, as lower clubs sell their superstars to higher clubs and use the fees to cover operations.

I think the only way for the FBS to survive anywhere close to intact is through some type of revenue sharing system overseen by a strong FBS Commissioner. I’m not holding my breath.

For reference here are the top FCS budgets according to the same report (someone commented that NDSU is 11):

I’m just the idea man! I leave the logistics to others. It’s called delegation!!
