Sorry if this was already posted here…so much activity on the board it’s tough to keep track.
Great story…
I hope Steele never leaves, but if he does, Holmes as HC and Khristian Smith as assistant HC would be a great pairing for Miami.
=>Wonder what @DevilGrad thinks of him?
This is really informative. Had no idea about his background and coaching pedigree. I wonder why he hasn’t gotten head coaching opportunities.
The path to go from mid-major associate HC to Head coach is a tough path unless you are coach in waiting. You either are dropping down to the bottom 10% of schools which is a dead end or you follow a path like Rob Summers, assistant at a P4 school, then get a Horizon job
As much as it pains me to say it, I think when Steele leaves (which will likely be at the end of this season unfortunately), he’ll be taking Holmes (and possibly others) with him.
As long as he’s wearing Miami red, we can forget about his poor taste in shades of blue. I hadn’t pieced together that he was on Mike Schrage’s staff at Elon. The reason that job opened up in 2022 is that Jon Scheyer hired Schrage as a special assistant to put some more experience on his bench since the rest of his initial Duke staff was pretty young.
Why would he leave unless it’s OSU or IU?
Is this speculation or are birdies whispering in your ear?

I wonder if his buddies call him Johnny Wadd.
Sounds like pure speculation
Complete speculation. But Steele had a historic year and bigger programs will come knocking. Happens every year. And a bigger school won’t flinch about paying his buyout. I think he’d pull Holmes and Smith bc Steele seems like a loyal guy, and he talks about them specifically during interviews quite a bit.
However, I’m trying not to think about it and just enjoy this epic run. Miami basketball has not been this fun in decades.
Isn’t the buyout only $150,000. Peanuts for P4 schools.
Yes, but Steele is only making $300K annually. I’m no mind reader but having billionaire in-laws probably shifts his priorities less from salary to the program support his university can provide. Miami can never outbid power programs on that, but if he’s happy there may be a level of NIL, assistant, and facilities investment that’s enough to keep him around for at least another season.
Related note, but all five MAC basketball head coaches hired away since 2011-12 (Groce, Christian, Hurley, Oats, Dambrodt) had at least one career NCAA tourney appearance.
It would be great if he could stay another couple years. As you mentioned he may not be motivated by money.
They took one of the worst jobs and made it one of the best. Now they are playing with the house’s money. Why leave as long as the pay is fair?
I have absolutely no inside information but assuming that because his in-laws have considerable means he does is unreasonable. Most people by choice or necessity are not substantially impacted by extended families resources.
It is unlikely that the family is a piggy bank that Mr. And Mrs Steele can just tap into. Furthermore, it is likely that they would like to make their own money.
Unfortunately, Mr. Steele and his family are likely to be very receptive to the 1.5 million plus salary he is likely to be offered at years end by someone not named Miami. I sincerely hope I am wrong.
I agree, ultimately this is all speculation for someone we don’t know personally. But we do know that Steele is making a below market salary while having extremely wealthy family. Also I’ve seen people say on this board that him and his wife are building a house in the Cincinnati area, for whatever that tells us.
Maybe we just raise his salary along with the assistants and it’s a moot point. Unless OSU or IU open, why leave?
