New Miami Major

Since Miami has effectively done away with majoring in foreign languages, it has come up with a new major called World Languages and Cultures. Recently approved by the Ohio Department of Higher Education, the WLC major encompasses Classical Studies (Latin), East Asian Languages and Cultures (Japanese and Chinese), French, German, Italian Studies, and Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies.

Lame. As a former Classics major it just make me sad/mad.

Will we have enough faculty left to continue Miami’s historic role with the National Junior Classical League? Looks like the 2025 national convention was in Oxford. I wasn’t a major, but I remember Judith DeLuce spending a lot of time on that back in the day.

She did a presentation at the 2025 convention. I would guess as long as there’s someone that still has a connection to her at Miami, things will continue. I think Stephen Tuck is following in her footsteps but I could be wrong. I was kind of an invisible major when I was there.

Sounds like a major that could help lead to a career in the diplomatic corps.
