New Miami Arena Rumor

I am aware of that.

I don’t think the loss of an open grass field is all that bad considering the trade off

The slant walk would not be good, to your point

I have heard that there’s a good possibility that Williams Hall (the old radio/tv building on Maple Street next door to Phillips) is due for demolition. Perhaps this is an opportunity for a bigger footprint than simply a replacement of Phillips Hall (room for a dedicated parking garage). In this instance, I would lean in favor of using that location over Cook Field.

A Williams/Phillips site could be really good. With academic wings for Kinesiology and Communications maybe even sports leadership giving those programs state of the art facilities and incorporating them into real world experiences with athletics.

Incorporate a similar size parking structure to what’s already there and then parking is not an issue.

Excellent idea. By the way I put the article on the Miami Parents Facebook group and explained the areas being discussed. I gave no personal opinions. Kept neutral. For what it is worth the reaction from current Miami parents is overwhelming negative to both sites-Cook for the hotel and across from Lewis for the arena. I’m doing my
own market research!

To be fair, given what we see with attendance and general interest at the moment in basketball, I wouldn’t expect parents and even current students to be excited about the choices for a potential new arena.

But this is about an investment into the future of the basketball program. So 5/10/15 years down the road students will be super excited to be a part of it. I’ve seen it firsthand at Xavier with their students. Miami should have the foresight and confidence to make a decision not for today’s students but for tomorrow’s.

Miami needs to use foresight to make decisions that are good for today’s students and tomorrow’s students. Which includes and should prioritize responsible development and preservation of campus assets. Not that it matters but 2024 marked the 37th year in succession that our donations to Miami University exceeded 4 digits. Some years’ have been in 5 digits. And the last two years donations don’t include the out of state tuition we are paying. So we have rather strong ties to the University and concerns for its future. As I am sure many, if not all, on this board do.

Put it on the space in front of Millett and then raze Millett. Parking already there. Only a couple blocks from old Withrow, near the fraternities and East and North Quads still.

Plus, there will be a new hotel (92 rooms) beside Millett soon.

Which I trust they will. They made decisions on new Goggin and new FSB while I was a student. Good choices, even if I as a student got the construction end of those decisions.

Phil-I had no issue with the new Goggin. I attended hockey games for 4 years in the cozy confines of the old Goggin. Never missed a home game. And I think you are somewhat missing the point on my comment. I have seen golf courses in St Louis disappear for housing developments. That affects current and future golfers. And I hated seeing these established courses disappear. But money rules over sentiment. Those courses are gone and will never come back. Along with the trees and wildlife on and around them. One about to disappear is Normandie Golf Club, established in 1901 by Robert Foulis, one of the oldest courses west of the Mississippi. It likely soon will be gone in the name of “progress”. Beautifully laid out course.

I think that would have been a good location but with the installation of the geothermal wells there I don’t know that construction on the site would be feasible.

Fair. But I think, based on what I’ve seen all over campus, a new basketball arena on the proposed site being discussed will be well done and fit in with the overall feel of campus. And there will be still be tons of green space on campus and surrounding campus.

I guess we will see. Money always wins the day.

Don’t threaten me with a good time.

Because an arena used for various University functions like commencements, concerts, and other speaker events is considered a tool for general Miami University use, and because Millett Hall is 56 years old and because the long range plan targeted 2025 as the estimated timing to replace the old university arena, the university in general (without assistance from private donors) will likely issue bonds and use other funds for the construction of the new arena (much like debt service was used to build/renovate several recent dorms). My belief is that 35% or so of the total cost is all that the Athletic Dept and private donors would have to come up with - this is mostly conjecture on my part, but supported by comparing to how other major projects that MU leadership identified as important were handled in the recent past.

As many on this site know, I’ve been on a new arena/renovated arena for a long long time. It is way overdue. However, where are we really? We have the money? This is getting done? Or…is this the same guy from Chicago waiting for the Amazon money to come in? Does anyone have anything definitive?

A “Cradle of Coaches” building. I think there is a sports management related major too?

The McCloskeys are suing you just for posting that.
