I think it’s an active upper class dorm
So it’s a vote? Cool. Do I log on to a link somewhere or is MHT hooked in?
As a follower and practitioner of the Tao of JohnnyMac, I vote for #2.
Gotta use your Hotmail account to log into aol.com
We can do that.
- 1 - Slant Walk
- 2 - North of Goggin
- 3 - Band Field
- 4 - Cook Field
- 5 - North of Slant Walk
- 6 - South of McKie Field
- 7 - Miami Inn
- 8 - Millett Hall
- 9 - Millett Parking Lot
I think as of this year or last it’s no longer being used as a dorm.
I believe that is correct.
It seems to me that most of the preferred locations would be awfully tight compared to the current footprint of Millett. That also does not include parking requirements.
I know the plan is probably to have an arena that is probably more in the range of 5,000 seats than 9,300 but that would still be bigger than Goggin.
It is hard to not put Cook Field at the top of the list.
Intramural fields moved to area near 8 and 9 close to all other athletic fields.
I would consider doing the hotel adjoining the arena. There is room for a parking garage behind Cook that would be out of sight. It seems it would make sense for the hotel to be close to business school and Armstrong Center.
This also provides the easiest ingress and egress from the arena and hotel form Cincy, Dayton etc. without going through most of the campus.
Bigger than goggin yes, but an ice arena is 200ft long while a basketball court is 94ft so you will be building seats up vertically rather than horizontally (though I do realize the building itself is much bigger than a court)
If that’s correct I would put the arena there. Not much closer to South Quad but certainly for East Quad. Nothing really on any side of the existing structure.
Cook Field looks to have the most room. I would hope that we could make the area a destination with hotel, arena and something like a casual dining or food court adjoining both under one roof that would be accessible to students in East Quad and also service the hotel and arena.
I would hope that the powers that be would be doing a little out of the box thinking on all of this.
Millett would easily fit in the Williams hall space, and any new arena should be a smaller footprint between layout changes and reduced capacity. It could also use the South campus garage like goggin does, and if you need additional parking it doesn’t seem impossible to me to add a secondary garage on the existing parking lots there.
Yep. That is why I have thought all along somewhere near Goggin would be ideal.
Side note, but I wonder who the lead donor(s) might be. Aren’t Steele’s in-laws extremely wealthy? Whoever it is I hope they don’t pay in Xerox stock. Niccol Arena has a nice ring to it.
Do you think it could be Starbucks Arena;
or will we get Starbucks Skybox Pressbox?
If it’s Starbucks money, the exit sign better say “thanks a latte for visiting.”

There is a lot to argue for the Williams Hall space for all the points you make.
However, I believe the ability to potentially combine hotel, arena and perhaps a casual dining area, combined with easier ingress and egress to the routes used to major population centers such as Cincinnati, Dayton, Middletown, Hamilton makes it far superior.
What is the logic to locating closer to uptown? It has to be the bar scene. It that is the case incorporate a bistro bar setting in the concept as well to make it a destination for students even when there are no games.
Cook Field would be closer to students living in East Quad, South Quad, North Quad and Western than uptown. It is also a bit more centrally located than the Williams location on that score. Think out of the box. We have the ability to create the environment we want with more space.
I also don’t see the logic of taking some of Cook Field just for a hotel which developers believe is the preferred location.
*The logic, according to Miami’s administration, is that they want something near the uptown area to distract students from the entire drinking scene. I think it has to be something that is highly visible and easy to get to. It is not to
make it easier for alumni to access the bars after a game.
But now that Miami serves alcohol at Miami athletic events, the hypocrisy is not lost on me (or likely the beer consuming students either.)
There is no logic to the administration’s argument if that is what it is.
“They want something near the uptown area to distract from the entire drinking scene”
Then why build something closer to uptown?
The reality is that the preferred location would make it much easier for students to go to a game and then proceed uptown to take part in the drinking scene.
When I first saw the proposal I thought that must be the logic. That can be the only logic I can see.
*“Highly visible and easy to get to”.
Cook Field location would be much more visible, easier to get in and out of with less traffic congestion and closer to all students on campus than what is proposed.
As for the alumni attending games and wanting to get access to uptown to drink.
The current demographic of alumni attending games is primarily interested in going home and going to bed after games—that includes afternoon contests.
That is why I call the loyal contingent of season ticket holders the “Red and Gray Club”.
A great arena/location isn’t going to solve our fan support issues, one only needs to look at NIU/EMU for that (and Akron/Kent for the reverse). A new facility should theoretically boost it and give our staff an edge in recruiting at least for the short-term, but it’s an opportunity we can’t squander.
