I actually don’t mind any of the in campus locations mentioned so long as the architecture is complementary to the surrounding campus and the overall net effect is esthetically pleasing. I was originally a proponent of the Cooke Field locale but have seen many good reasons here that perhaps placing it near Goggin would also have benefits.
Being a slightly better mid major probably wont move the needle much but I think Ohio States academic improvement coincided with their highest level football results over the last 20 years
I know Miami rarely beats Ohio State for kids in the high school my kids went to
Either is a patch of grass with a concrete sidewalk, to be fair. And I’d wager a new arena and potentially exciting basketball program could do a lot more.
Anyone seen this new video?
Ohio State’s academic reputation began to improve in the 90’s because the state allowed them to finally have selective admissions. They had always been a blueblood in football before that.
I agree with you all that new basketball arenas are not a metric the USNWR considers. However, alumni participation (donations) and acceptance rates are important in most college ranking systems. Having a popular and successful basketball team will lead to more alumni donations and more student applications, which will improve student selectivity. Miami’s acceptance rate not long ago was hovering around 90% which is a discussion for a different board.
Something needs to change. OSU was a peer academic institution several years ago, and now we are comparing ourselves to Toledo…
Possibly, though anecdotally I bet one could argue that more highly qualified students would say the overall look and feel of Miami’s campus is more of a draw than any one particular building, piece of infrastructure, or athletic program. I know one of the big reasons I chose Miami is because it looks like the quintessential college campus.
It absolutely did. Now they have huge money to pay profs more! Back when I was a rascal you needed a pulse to get into OSU. Today, it’s a top 70 public school.
I grew up a Buckeye fan - they are way better now than then. When I went to Miami - Ohio State was a power but if they finished top 10 it was rare. Yes it is a legendary program but the Earle Bruce- John Cooper years were not what they are now
Boise State witnessed a big increase in applications and alumni donations after they beat Oklahoma in the 2007 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. Academically, they’re still on par with most community colleges.
This! The Flutie Effect does two things, and both are temporary. It increases the quantity of applications but not the quality. It increases donations to the athletic department but not the overall university.
That’s the primary reason they weren’t considered a serious candidate for the recently disintegrated PAC 12. 50 years ago, when I attended a few Idaho games, Vandals students chanted BJC BJC. I bet they still do.
…and in our era, OSU was a back up school for those who could not get into Miami. One of my friends here in NC had that exact experience in the early 80’s…applied and wanted to go to Miami but didn’t get in, and then went to OSU which is where he received his business degree.
Yep. When our son interviewed at Duke, they had just won a national bb championship. Each of the people who interviewed him on campus said the number of applicants was up, but the “basketball fans only” mostly were not getting a second interview. The family interview at Georgetown was eye opening, but I won’t dare put in print what we were told. ( basketball was mentioned).
Way back when I applied to Miami some of my fellow students did not because they knew they had no chance. They could get into OSU or BG if they had a diploma from an Ohio high school but Miami was then very selective. Toledo was known as Bancroft High for a reason.
Come on! You simply can’t leave us hanging like that!
I saw an article on their fundraising campaign. It originated in the athletic department and then was expanded into a university-wide campaign, and almost half the money raised is going to the AD. Boise is not a model for anyone.
Another reason we need to get together again.
Maybe Brick Street can be converted to an uptown multi-purpose basketball sound stage and bar.
My wife went to Georgetown! Now I need to know!
Really cool
We’ve got cool phucking Facebook videos, but can’t seem to run a 30-60 second ad on our televised football games?!
