New Arena?

What I didn’t see is how many seats the new basketball arena will have, unless I missed it. Also, total cost of the project is 280 million and if I am reading correctly only 450K has been pledged (donated) towards its cost. So the vast majority of this will be paid for by debt service. But maybe I am reading that wrong too.

Same. I saw nothing on seats for basketball only volleyball. Interesting omission….

I tried counting the number of seats depicted in Figure 8 of Section 9a, but lost count after 2,357.

The new rec field looks so much better than the existing cook field

After seeing the report on costs to renovate Millett I don’t see how anyone can come away with any other idea other than replacing it. Report also notes this doesn’t include costs to finding another place to play and house facilities until the rehab is done.

I will say that having less than 1 percent of the total cost in hand is rather disturbing.

Projected student decline was hard to totally get my head around. Less college age kids being born? Ai making 4 years less important? Not able to better recruit the country?

Okay, so using Millett seat counts, there are 60 seats down the 94’ of the court. Millett has four sections, this shows three within the baselines. In the drawing, one side shows 14 rows, the other shows 17. That is 1,860 seats. If we then take number and estimate the behind the basket sections are equal to the sideline sections and the four wedge sections equal two regular sections, the 1,860 doubles to 3,720 seats + premium areas.

I never once stepped on Cook. I think my roommate did for intramural soccer. There’s plenty of other green space.

It’s called the Demographic Cliff, and every college and university is going to have to address this. Miami is fortunate because they’re a solid in-state option for Ohio kids, and a strong option for Illinois students who don’t want to go to UIUC, Northwestern, or Illinois State. Also expanding student outreach to Texas and California.

This I think. Probably will be a trend everywhere

Two thoughts:

  1. I hope they will consider adding more searing than what it currently shows. I think this year has shown when we are good there is fan interest. Maybe not a 10k person arena but I would think we should keep it around 7-8k, especially with graduation events.
  2. Less than $450k in fundraising is concerning. What happened to these donors we have heard about? I hope they are just waiting for final board approval, otherwise this is not good. Hopefully the success this year will increase donations. Even more reason this project needs to be done now!

When kids learn they can make more money in the trades with less cost to do so, college looses its importance.

If I had to guess, we briefed the architects with a lower capacity than anyone anticipated we may need before this season. I feel like edits can happen without ballooning the cost too much.

I don’t know how funding/timing worked for Armstrong, FSB, or Goggin, anyone remember?

Goggin had one large donation $10M+ from, I believe, a former player that stipulated it was anonymous and Cady had to be honored.

Much easier to get big money once you actually have a plan or a location or a timeline or an approval.

Hard to ask someone to write a 7 or 8 figure check for an amorphous arena project.

Couldn’t find a seat total either but the plan is to allocate 25% of the seats for students. Wonder if the students get bleacher seats & the rest is chair seating?
