Hearing rumors the board is meeting this week to vote on new basketball arena. Anyone know if this is the case?
The Board of Trustees meeting is 2/26/26 and the arena is definitely on the agenda to be discussed.
Ugh. I can’t even with this guy.
As one of the 10 (no way that’s accurate), shut up, Davey. Go get your shovel.
I don’t personally know a single person who is against building a new arena. Some have a preferred location but none say “no arena needed.” I guess like the rest of the world, even people in science can make up facts if it serves their purpose.
Let’s be honest, the new arena sucks for current students. They’ll deal with years of construction, lose Cook Field, and most will graduate before it opens. So they get lots of negatives and most won’t be on campus for opening. I feel for that perspective. You can acknowledge that and still support doing it. My understanding is the plan is very unpopular on campus (although the success of the team has impacted that some).
But it will be better for the future and in 5 years new incoming students won’t even know Cook Field used to be a field. It’s just the way things go. Miami is a 200+ year institution. Just the way of things.
Cook Field is being replaced by an AI simulation of Cook Field! ![]()
“Our thrilling season proved that a winning team Is the real driver of attendance and not a central location.” No shit Sherlock. We aren’t going 27-0 every year. There will be bad years. It would be nice if cobwebs didn’t grow in the arena during those years. Also a winning team doesn’t bring concerts and other events to town
I mean look at goggin. The past couple years were absolutely terrible and yet, attendance never really dipped under 50% and there were still sellouts
10 out of 10 asbestos silicates don’t want a new arena.
Making up a statistic is enjoyable.
So I plan to send an email as he suggests but in support of the new arena. Need to make sure all views are heard and not just the ones from the disgruntled minority.
Per his post;
President Crawford’s email is crawfogp@miamioh.edu and the BoT secretary is Ted Pickerill pickerto@miamioh.edu.
Also his post is on Linkedin and I would also propose that the number of people on this site that have better facts than what he represents in his post would set him straight.
I would prefer to see Miami have a new stadium where Wells and Joyner are currently located, as I prefer greenspace. However, Cook Field used to be a stadium and it seemed like it worked out ok then … it’s not like Miami is demolishing Hueston Woods.
Incorrect.
This is the funniest comment I’ve seen on this page
Perfect example of my point. No students and most alumni at this point could tell you where Miami Field was.
In 20 years, same will be true for Cook Field (and Millett Hall).
Lots has changed since 1809. Constantly evolving campus. Things will be lost but things will be gained.
Armstrong wasn’t even on campus like 15 years ago. I’m sure students at the time weren’t happy with a lot of construction at the center of campus. But I’m sure no one would go back to what it was before it was there now
Most people don’t realize there used to be a golf course on campus, a parking garage is where old Goggin is, Pearson is where Miami Field was, Withrow is a dorm. Point being there is always going to be something where something else was or is. Most people (not all) that don’t want an arena on Cook Field don’t want a new arena anywhere. They don’t want Miami investing in athletics, they want 100% going to academics.
Let’s logically play the renovate Millett game, where are you playing mens and women’s b-ball while that is done? Where does volleyball play? Where does the ROTC offices go? Where do the athletic offices go? Wheres the training room at? Are we playing at Talawandas gym, Hamilton campus gym? How much abestos is in the buidling? What’s the cost to remediate that (tens of millions of dollars alone) What ADA compliance laws are needed to be addressed? What about the structural issues in the sub gym and water intrusion? Like with any other remodel you run into unexpected issues even with a relatively new house. Millett is going to be riddled with tons of other issues that no one can foresee until they are uncovered. I’d wager a guess that by the time you are done remodeling Millett, making it ADA compliant, addressing the structural issues, and removing asbestos you will be at or more the cost of a new arena.
Prytherch’s “Maybe 13M per year” comment is just so dumb and such a scare tactic. That assumes the entire arena is being funded by students. Let’s assume it is. Dividing that by about 20k students is $650 per student per year. Far less scary, and I’d argue well worth the price (not that the entire cost is going to be covered by tuition anyways)
