FIU beat Hampton yesterday 70 to 60. They are 4-6 and play in Conference USA. We have only played them once previously, it was December 31, 1986 on their campus and I was there. We lost.
Yesterday 5-8 Jr guard Parris Atkins had 21 and she is their leading scorer at 14.7 ppg. 6-4 Sr Isnelle Natabou and 5-11 Jr Angela Belloso both average 10.8ppg.
Coach Box was very pleased with the team and our 25 point win over GW yesterday. A win and we can finish the nonleague portion of the season 7-3. Next game starts the MAC season against the conference favorite Ball State.
Up by 9 at the half. Eng with 13 and is 3-4 on threes. Lard very steady in extended minutes. We had 13 steals yesterday and have another 8 in the first half today.
Tretter, Singer, and Richason all got two fouls and played limited minutes. Singer 2, Richason 5, and Tretter 10 minutes. Question. Is Hennessy Lu-Brown on the trip? Good thing Gonzalez is hitting.
Tretter and Gonzalez both picked up their 4 th fouls with just under two minutes to go in the third and we immediately started turning it over and the lead went from 13 to 5 quickly. We are up 7 at the end of 3 and in trouble. Gonzalez with 24 points and 4 fouls.
Wow! That game got really wild in the second half. We had 28 turnovers, 28! But they had 26. Our two stars both had 4 fouls late in the 3rd quarter but played most of the 4th quarter without fouling out. Maya Chandler got a technical and fouled out.
Gonzalez had a season high 29 points. Tretter had 10 and 7 including 4 points in one possession when we were up 4. The closest it got was 3 points. We actually pushed it back out to 13, but with a 3 at the buzzer they got it back down to 7. Great win for us because we pulled out a tough road win. 7-3, we open MAC play at home on New Years Day vs preseason favorite Ball State.
I really like the team Coach Box has put together in his second year. Fun to watch. They play with a lot of defensive intensity. Too many offensive turnovers but if they can clean those up and think we can win a lot of games in the MAC.
A big coaching improvement over the prior regime. However, Coach Box might want to step up his game day wardrobe a little bit. He looked like he came right off the beach to coach this one.
It’s been the tradition for many years that coaches dress casually for these holiday tournaments. On Friday he wore a camp shirt with Miami logos and cargo shorts.
