Not too shabby. Dare I say, pretty damn good! This is the 42nd-straight semester for Miami Athletics with a collective student-athlete GPA of 3.0 or higher.
50 RedHawks earned a 4.0 this semester, and 77.69% of Miami student-athletes earned a term GPA of at least 3.0. The women’s swim/dive team led all RedHawk teams with a 3.75 GPA as a group, while Miami Golf had the highest men’s team GPA at 3.54.
Akron Zips (Football): In May 2025, the entire football program was declared ineligible for the 2025 postseason. This “bowl ban” was triggered by the team’s multiyear Academic Progress Rate (APR) score of 914, which fell below the NCAA’s required minimum of 930.
Quincy University (Multiple Sports): In December 2025, the NCAA sanctioned the university after a former official falsified documents to improperly certify 121 student-athletes as eligible between 2021 and 2024. Many of these athletes were actually academically ineligible at the time of competition.
Jackson Filer (Iowa Hawkeyes): A former Iowa recruit was unable to secure a scholarship and eventually moved to Grand View University after struggling to maintain eligibility due to academic performance during his time at Iowa.
That is pretty scant evidence considering the tens of thousands college athletes.
I doubt many on this board remember the 1.6 rule that the NCAA put in place in late 1960’s which was the first attempt to control academic shenanigans.
A recruit had to project that they could obtain at least a 1.6 GPA in order to be admitted to participate in athletics. 1.6!!!.. This was calculated based on a formula based on HS gpa, test scores Despite that low bar, ,many could not meet it and had to go JUCO.
It proved unworkable and was replaced by a simple minimum of 2.0 gpa in HS.
This is also gamed as we saw in the movie “The Blind Side” where Michael Oher got a private tutor to make sure he got all A’s in his last few course to get him the 2.0 so that he could get admitted to Univ of Mississippi.
You asked a question, I did a quick AI search on most recent examples, and that is what came up. I am sure you can find more if you wish to invest the time, which I don’t.
And…In the late 70s…Bernie N’s grades were fine. But…He dropped a second-semester class, and suddenly became ineligible for the basketball team, and the upset over defending national champion Marquette in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
I am sure there are plenty of ineligible athletes out there but not sure schools are big about announcing it. Not really any need for the public to know.
