Ran into a few of the gals over at Brick last night and I’m tellin’ ya… somebody could write a full blown movie script about this season with some of the stories bein’ shared. Lotta emotion in that clubhouse from top to bottom. And whether folks wanna admit it or not, quite a few still feel Coach K was just a better fit for Miami softball and the type of roster they had. Sometimes talent alone ain’t enough. Chemistry, confidence, and lettin’ players breathe matters too. From the sounds of it, this team got micromanaged to death by the end of the year. Tight ropes everywhere. Girls thinkin’ too much instead of just playin’ ball. And when that happens, especially in May, ya tighten up real quick. Shame too… because there was enough talent on that squad to make a serious run.
If you been to Brick maybe it weren’t by chance after all. I was over at Brick, saw some of the girls and went up talkin’ to ’em myself. Asked questions, listened more than anything, ‘cause truth be told I believed this team had the talent to make a real run. From the outside lookin’ in, ya saw flashes of it all season long. But after hearin’ some of the stories and conversations, it makes ya realize talent alone don’t always carry the wagon. There was a whole lot more goin’ on underneath the surface than folks probably know.
From what I was hearin’, it weren’t just Coach K girls feelin’ that way neither. There was both Coach K stays and Coach Mandy transfers that seemed to have similar frustrations. Sounded more like issues with the head assistant coach, a whole lotta micromanagin’, and some internal culture/emotional check stuff from within the program itself. I also heard one of the team leaders gettin’ benched caused some real rifts in that locker room. Once that happened, seemed like tensions started buildin’ and things kinda snowballed from there. Truthfully, some of that probably goes on at a lotta places nowadays, but when expectations get sky high and wins stop coverin’ things up, it tends to boil over real quick.
Team isn’t built right yet. You can’t beat as many P4 teams as we did this year and then lose to Akron and the others we lost to if your team is dialed in. I think the coach will get it right soon.
Howdy… Brick was definitely the spot last night. Felt like dang near the whole Miami squad was in there and buddy, the conversations were JUICY. You could tell there’s a whole lotta stuff going on behind the scenes right now.
Did the conversations involve a student arrested for trying to buy cocaine from an undercover DEA? Because that’s a helluva lot more juicy than some athletes venting after a season of highs and lows.
No way, not even close . We’re talkin’ about athletes ventin’ after a season fulla highs, lows, frustrations, and emotions boilin’ over. Now was it juicy for softball/program drama standards? Oh absolutely. Felt like every person had a different side of the story and everybody was unloadin’ at once over some cold drinks. Funny part was, no matter where the story started, they all seemed to end at the same place… and pointin’ at the same person bein’ the root of the problem.
Hell, stuff like this happens everywhere nowadays, not just here. End of the day, they still won a whole lotta ballgames, but honestly with the talent they had, feels like they shoulda won even more in my opinion.
Ya nah, they ain’t lettin’ dudes play girls sports around here, and I sure as heck ain’t old enough to be somebody’s parent haha. Nice try there, Inspector Gadget. I’m just passin’ along what I heard, that’s all. Carry on haha
