David Diaz-Infante was dominant as their middle linebacker. I think he played some in the NFL.
And you noted they had a really good QB in Perez. I also was at the LSU game in Baton Rouge that season when we beat #8 LSU 21-12. We used to play the big boys tough in days gone by…
I was at the University of Glasgow that year, so I didn’t get the score until about two days later in the agate type of the International Herald Tribune. Probably just as well.
That was the first bowl game I ever attended. Bob Babich and two of his friends from San Diego had the room next to mine at the hotel. Bob was a very nice guy.
Former Bengals QB John Stofa’s kid was on the team. John was a very good guy. We hung out together at the practice on Friday afternoon. I ran into Bob Hitchens at the hotel bar after the game. We hit a club in the area later that evening. I was single and 37! lol
Everything about the trip was great except the result of the game.
Clubbing with Bob Hitchens is…something.
Yes, my junior year at Miami. That 1986 team was terrific.
Stofa’s kid caught our TD pass in that game IIRC. He ended up leaving the team the following year ..had a fall out w Rose apparently.
Stofa was on the roster in 1988
Swarn couldn’t run the ball that game. Rushed for over 1100 yards that year, 1986, yet in the bowl could only get 46 on 15 carries. Morris threw 4 INT. Miami great Andy Marlatt was the Miami MVP for that game. Before there was a Caiden Woullard or Adam Trick there was Andy Marlatt, 6’4" 250 DE who brought havoc to MAC QBs. Played in the Arena League and was also a coach at Wisconsin I believe.
No. Miami played San Jose State in that 1986 bowl game.
I ran into his Dad at a UC Miami game after he transferred to UC. John didn’t want to talk about his kid’s experience at Miami.
That is correct.
