Miami Overtime Record

Is this the first overtime game Miami has ever won? It seems to me our record in Overtime is very poor (I remember a lot of heartache). The system has been in use for many years, so it would seem we would have a victory here or there, but I can’t think of another one.

This occured to me just a few minutes ago. I think it’s our first.

Per the official writeup, yes.

Trivia Item: The first OT game in college football history involved a MAC team. I witnessed it. It was the Las Vegas Bowl in 1995. Gary Pinkel’s Toledo Rockets played Chris Ault’s Nevada Wolfpack at the old Sam Boyd Stadium.

As it appeared the game was going to end in a tie and fans started to leave, the PA announcer informed folks that the NCAA had authorized a test of the new OT procedures during the 1995 bowl season. He explained the procedures to us.

We sat down to witness what was going to unfold. I don’t remember exactly how it happened but the Rockets scored and held off the Pack to win the first OT game ever.

I was there because the week had been promoted as Big West/MAC Week in Las Vegas. Ball State and Herb Sendek’s Miami teams took on UNLV and Long Beach State and Bowling Green played Western Michigan in hockey.

Assistant Coach Charlie Coles bought a few of us a round in the Casino bar.

I think I attended around 20 of those Las Vegas Bowls at Sam Boyd Stadium.

It was a crazy place to play. Out in the middle of nowhere - about a 20-25 minute bus ride from the strip.

I learned to park in a adjacent city park and buy tickets from scalpers. The least I ever paid was $5 and the most was $25, the year that BYU played Utah and the game was sold out in advance.
