=>A lot of bonehead fouls down the stretch.
And up 4 with one second left is not the time to contest a three-pointer. I was yelling at the TV “no no no no no.”

Miami wins on a floor where they rarely win. With five freshmen and three other newcomers. Three days after beating Akron.
But why are they tightly guarding three point shooters up four?
I was coaching 3rd grade basketball and just saw the result. I very much admire the direction MU hoops is going. I’d have loved to see this one live. If we stay healthy and play smart, why not us to win the MAC?
Gametracker definitely not made for close games (see “Ball State” and “Akron”). Should come with a defibrillator.
My full assessment would be this. Whoever did the scout did a great job. We were on point and then some, especially defensively. Our helpside defense was always in the right spot in the 1st half. We attacked the defensive glass. We moved our feet really well. Offensively, we were aggressive. We played a great 1st half.
In the 2nd half, we played Mirambeaux too much and the offense went into a black hole. When Mirambeaux is the game, we live and die with him because he’s going to either shoot or try to make a pass for a layup. There isn’t much in between with him. So he either gets on a roll like he did on Saturday or he disrupts the rhythm of the offense as he did tonight. I don’t understand why Potter didn’t play more. Potter had 2 rebounds in 9 minutes. Mirambeaux had 1 rebound in 20 minutes. That can’t happen.
When our offense bogs down, we need alternative solutions besides dumping it into Mirambeaux. Some of it is our guys needing to be just as aggressive trying to get into the lane, moving without the ball. But the staff can help by seeing what works during the game. Early in the 2nd half, Hunter had a pick and roll in the corner, used the screen, dribbled to his left, got to the elbow, went to the step back and drilled it. That was the right combo of his spot and his shot. That’s the shot that won the game on Saturday. Why not run that again? Then run it in the other corner. When Kent hedges hard then, slip the big guy to the basket off the overplay.
I thought Bultman had a very nice game. He deserved to get to the line more. Elmer was terrific early, he just needs to stay out of foul trouble. I thought Dean gave good minutes in his 1st time back. The freshmen guards had more good moments than bad. I thought Morris, while not pretty, fought around the basket.
It feels good to put back-to-back efforts together like this. Let’s keep getting better and get another big one at the Convo.
Excellent analysis. I didn’t watch it but I admire the nuance of your reporting.
Akron beats Eastern Michigan by 31.
My son and I went to the game
Very fun to win at Kent. Although the crowd numbers arent big (and it feels like a high school gym per my son) they do make noise and it is always a very tough to win
We played a great first half and a nervous and foul happy second half. Kent is a little down but still a huge road win
Darweshi Hunter with an enormous 3 and 4 huge free throws down the stretch
Hunter is a pro. Just an insanely great pick up.
Red Sea - just curious. Was there much/any interaction between Safford and Miami players or coaches before or after the game?
I’ll take any sort of ugly win at Kent at any time.
We could see two guys dressed in red behind the Miami bench.
Sorry I didnt even see Safford and we got to the game right at tip off because of work etc
Also the two guys in red where different guys
But you can see us in the mcneil tweet about mac basketball - I was wearing red and my son was in a grey Miami sweatshirt
My buddies Pete and Paul Nolan.
As usual, great analysis. One point I would make though is that while Potter had 2 rebounds and Mirambeaux had 1, Morris had 10. Why not play him more?
I would like to see Morris and Potter on the floor together. Also, except for his last turnover and foul, I thought Cooper had a very good game last night, especially defensively.
Pete and Paul were very visible on the TV broadcast. I spotted them right away and told my wife. Good to see them make the trip!
What I would think about doing is play all of them in the 1st half and see if what I thought going into the game matched what actually happened, see how effective they were. In the 2nd half, I’d distribute minutes based off how the 1st half went. I’d still probably play them all, but the proportion of minutes would vary. Like Sunday, I would’ve played Mirambeaux, Morris, and Potter in that order. But last night, I would’ve gone Potter, Morris, Mirambeaux. I would look to play Morris and Potter together some to see if that would work in a game.
Does anyone know why Mabry wasn’t dressed?
