Good night for Redsea.

Just catching up on the box score. The rebounding is night and day better from last year, Elmer had 6 in 18 minutes. Fantastic!

Yea us! Was a fun second half. Enjoyed talking to Dick at half time.

Played with better composure down the stretch. And Steele is coaching with more composure down the stretch. I think there’s a correlation there.

Nice win.

Freshmen- stay! Return us to glory!!!

A gut check win on multiple levels. Falling behind 7-0 right out of the gate, struggling to score for a long period in the 1st half, surviving their offensive rebounding, watching that 59-50 lead get down to 2. But we answered the call every time. To get a win like this before the tournament was important because this should give us a confidence boost that we can make some noise in Cleveland. And it turned into a tournament like game, very physical, a grinder of a game where points were hard to come by.

Dean was the MVP of the game. We weren’t doing much offensively in the 2nd half before he came in and started getting into the lane. Having the ball in his hands at the end of the game is something to think about. If Dean was the MVP, then Ipsaro made the play of the game with that back cut that drew a foul.

Defensively, another discipline, well prepared effort. BG is worse at shooting the 3 than Central and they’re a worse passing team. Both of those things played to our advantage. Whenever they got in the lane, they looked to score and not to pass, so we could help on them which led to so many blocked shots. The box score had 9 blocks, but I think they missed some.

A great win. Everyone should be proud. Hunter’s game shouldn’t go unnoticed, he kept us in the game for a long stretch.

And there was some interesting body language going on with the BG players after the game…

There were a few folks who started slow that I had written off for the game. I should learn my lesson by now. Hunter missed his first 3 shots of the game. Mirambeaux wasn’t rebounding, making layups, or taking care of the ball. Bultman looked hesitant. All three played really well starting at different points in the game. Dean was the spark that kept the game from getting out of reach at the start and kept it going.

I know the MAC is down historically overall, but I think Steele deserves some real credit with this team. I looked at the roster preseason and really didn’t see how we would win many games at all. I was very skeptical on many of these guys, and while they haven’t looked good at all at times, they won games. That we sit at #5 currently, in the top half of the conference, is astounding to me and a real accomplishment.

Raise your hand if you thought that there would be a stretch of games this season where Bradley Dean was our best player.

Bradley Dean has been our best player 2 games in a row. I will be honest, before seeing him in person last weekend, and then watching last night, I didn’t realize how sneaky quick he is. He was beating the BG guards off the dribble and down the court. And he is a very smart, heady player. Note how he stops on a dime to shoot a 12-15 footer rather than drive into traffic. That is smart basketball. I am really appreciating what he brings to the team, and he should be back next year.

I agree. So many haters have bashed him. But he’s now won 3 more D1 games than he did in season one, and we are tracking for at least 15 or more if we get real hot. (I don’t count D3 wins, nothing personal to those schools.) When we start getting 20 D1 wins, we can get post season invites. That 20 is a very significant number (to me at least) as we haven’t hit it in a long time. Steele has also improved so many aspects of the program. Recruiting, A plus staff, fundraising, and any behind the scenes magic he’s using to redo Millett. I don’t expect he will be here forever. We win a MAC title and NCAA game(s) and like those who did it in the past, he will be onto something greater. UC. OSU. UD. But he will have done what Chuck has in football. Leave things way better than he found them.

Need to also comment and give kudos on our D on Marcus Hill, the MAC’s second leading scorer, averaging over 21ppg and we held him to 8 points on 4-15 shooting. Simply outstanding team D.

Our D smothered BG and created some of that post-game frustration for Freddy and Freda Falcon’s boys.

To be fair, I don’t think there’s been a lot of ā€œhatingā€ towards Steele in here. (One very consistent hater.) The rest has been more conversation about personnel, getting a lot of T’s (mostly last year.) But for a college sports fan page, pretty darn civil.

For the most part, I think the attitude towards him has been positive, and people have been happy with the improved depth and talent. We’re 8-7 in the MAC. I wouldn’t think people would be angry about improvement, but also wouldn’t expect intense excitement since we were 6-7 before this week.

I don’t agree. I saw a lot of shit talking. But here’s the thing, with every step forward, it quiets a little bit more. If we have a miracle run and make the dance, those same haters will be the first to fund his statue so in the end, it doesn’t matter. Just win, baby!

I actually think the big upside of Steele is that he is likely to stay here a long time, even if he has success. Similar to his brother (Groce), he’s already coached at a higher level and didn’t have a lot of success. Therefore, it seems less likely a bigger program will take a chance on him.

Not sure if I’m considered a Steele hater or not. I thought he was a good hire for us, but I’ve certainly questioned whether Steele will be successful at Miami. While things are trending in the right direction, I’m not ready to crown him yet. The MAC is historically bad this year and we are #233 in the country. If we can get a top 6 seed and win at least one game in Cleveland, I would consider this season a great success. And retaining our talented young core in the offseason (plus adding 1-2 transfers) will be critical for next year.

I have 0 doubt that if Steele gets this program to its first tourny since 07 that he will be out of here.

Interesting and I strongly disagree. Curious what level program would offer Steele after winning one MAC title?

Also, do you think Groce is getting better offers and turning them down?
