Sorry to add more, but I am disgusted by your comments.
I don’t know who the hell you are. But your son (or other relative) was offered a full-ride by Miami to participate on the team. It was a decision the player made, together with family and friends. No one held a gun to his, or your, head to sign.
A MAJOR POINT–Miami 's budget for men’s basketball in '20-'21 was $2,712,121. I know–much less than other D1 programs. But, you take that $2M+, divide it by 13 players, and our school spent an average of $208,624.69 for EACH PLAYER! If your “son” is on scholly, that’s what it cost our program to keep him on the team for one year–tuition, r&b, travel, books, coaching, facility costs, et al. If he’s a walk-on, there is a legal principal which holds that “Equity will not aid a volunteer”. But he still receives significant benefits along with playing the game he loves.
I hope your player loves playing for and attending Miami. If he feels like you do, go to the portal.
Some of that budget is for coaching right- but great points. Miami sports lose money so tuition dollars are spent to fund our athletes scholarships.
I love Mitchell’s story. He has already overcome as much adversity as many would have in a lifetime.
He seems like a great individual based on everything I have seen.
Like many freshmen that end up at mid-majors he does not seem ready physically or in his total game skills to be a major contributor this year.
I don’t know what happened in the transition from Owens to Steele but the fact that he is on the roster meant that Travis honored the commitment Miami made to the young man. Many other coaches or institutions might have done something different.
The bottom line is that he has a year to prove himself, get stronger and improve his game. My hope is that he can show that he is invaluable to the team and has us looking forward to three strong years in the future.
No one can forecast what tomorrow brings. There is lot that we can’t control.
My wish is that Mitchell seizes the opportunity that he has right now and does everything he can with it.
Things will sort out in ways none of us can predict right now.
I choose to believe that most prove to work out for the best in the end.
The same is true for everyone else on the roster.
It seems plausible that the coaching staff has already had open discussions with certain players about their status for future seasons. Tatum, for example, is it possible when he was awarded a scholarship for this season, he was informed it was year-to-year contingent on scholarship availability in the future? If so, I see no problem with that. Shooter’s Comments about the coaching staff, Miami and the posters on this message board all seem way out of line, especially based on the innocent comments in this thread. As someone else noted, this message board is about as tame as I’ve seen from a sports message board.
Also, if players like Ames and Eller were encouraged to transfer when the new coaching staff started, I don’t have a problem with that either. They proved they weren’t D1 caliber. Welcome to life.
Javin Etzler confirmed for senior night, which gets us down to 15.
Bittersweet. He came here as a first team all state recruit. Had all the potential to be a huge asset until the injuries started to take their toll. I admire his perseverance and he earned his degree in a timely manner which given how demanding this sport is says a lot about his ability to balance. I wish him well in the great beyond that comes after exiting the 513.
This is the very sad and frustrating side of college sports that fans tend to not think much about. Hope he is or will be fully healed and hope his college experience made up for the loss of court time.
Injuries are part of life, think of all the young people who have been badly injured or crippled or killed as soldiers, or maybe in accidents of some sort. What Javin has had is a free education from Miami and one year of playing college basketball. Technically he still has at least 2 years of eligibility left and could use it somewhere else if this last surgery finally fixed the problem. He has a great degree and should have a bright future in whatever he wants to pursue, even basketball if that is what he wants to do, perhaps as a player or maybe in coaching.
I don’t blame Etzler one bit, but wow, his time in Oxford was disappointing. What could have been.

I am sorry that Eli Yofan’s college career at Miami is probably ending.
I half wonder if every name listed as locked for returning is in fact returning. Put another way, don’t assume Eli is done yet. My two cents. Unless of course you know something. Which if so, disregard.
Based on what? He’s not on scholarship. He was never promised a scholarship. He came to Miami to be a walk-on for Miami MBB. Nothing there has changed.
That’s 15 scholarships with the limit being 13. Something has to give.
I wonder if Tatum has been promised a scholarship for next season. I assume no, which would get us down to 14.
Wait, I think it’s 13 scholarships total but 15 players max. Is that correct?
Based on not being able to play much at all this year, Curtis Harrison return to basketball may be ‘iffy’ I think is fair to say, but nothing confirmed - hope he can see the floor some day.
Tatum I think was on an academic scholarship year 1? Maybe he returns to that…Anderson would be using his extra year, so again who knows on that…so there are two possibilities in those three scenarios.
That said if all these players return (and that’s an “if”)…Yofan would only be able to dress for home games, where I think there’s no restriction on #s on the bench.
If Harrison is out and Tatum returns to an academic scholarship then the number will be 13.
