MIAMI HOSTS UMASS GAME NOTES AND GAME THREAD

Miami hosts a UMASS team that seems to be underperforming a bit this year. 9pmET start time, so a little later than usual. On ESPNU.

UMass is currently 13-8 (4-5 MAC), as the Minutemen most recently defeated Buffalo
on the road (68-67) Friday night and Toledo (84-82) at home on Tuesday night. UMass went 12-20 (7-11 A10) last year. Head coach Frank Martin is in his fourth season with the Minutemen. Heading into the 2025-26 season, UMass was selected to finish fifth overall in the 2025-26 MAC Preseason Men’s Basketball Poll. Senior forward Daniel Hankins-Sanford was named to the Preseason All-MAC Second Team. Graduate student forward Leonardo Bettiol leads the Minutemen in points (17.1/game) and rebounds (7.5/game). Freshman guard Danny Carbuccia has recorded the most assists (6.0/game), guard/forward Jayden Ndjigue has totaled the most steals (1.7/game), and Hankins-Sanford has produced the most blocks (0.8/game).

Kind of crazy that Frank Martin is coaching in the MAC. He hasn’t had success in a while, but he did take Kansas State to the Elite Eight and South Carolina to the Final Four.

Frank Solich went to the national championship in football at Nebraska in 2001 as head coach. MAC has always had some good coaches. Stan Heath took Kent to Elite 8 in hoops. Some are really good retreads like Solich. Bowdin in football was pretty solid for Akron after he was at Auburn.

From Field Level Media Includes comments from Steele on Martin and his team.

I was at an early-season tournament in Puerto Rico years ago. K-State was there when Frank Martin was their coach. I was in the elevator, which stopped, and Frank Martin got on. I said “Hey Coach, how’s the team looking?” He answered with a growl, “Some of them don’t even know their own names!”

Miami campus and classes closed tomorrow. Game still on.

Miami campuses closed and classes held remotely Jan. 27

Miami University continues to monitor the weather and road conditions in the wake of the snow storm and extreme cold.

Miami University will hold classes remotely Tuesday, Jan. 27, and campus will be closed. Residence halls will remain open, and dining halls, the Recreation Center, Student Health Services, and Armstrong Student Center will open at 10 a.m.

Essential employees should be in communication with their supervisors regarding their on campus presence Tuesday, Jan. 27. All other staff positions should not come to campus. Managers and supervisors should utilize the university’s remote work policy and shift to remote work as appropriate.

As of now, the Miami Men’s Basketball game at 9 p.m. in Millett is scheduled to take place. Those employees that support basketball operations should report as usual for gameday operations.

Absolutely 0 excuse for students not to attend now

Full day of snowday day drinking and a 9pm tip? Going to be empty…or rowdy

Well the wind chills are miserable, in significant negative degrees, which is partially why classes are remote tomorrow. I won’t fault a student for not wanting to walk to Millett in that.

I’ve seen dozens of videos of students doing wild things in the snow. Also I believe there’s a planned snowball fight on cook field, if students can show up for that, they can show up for basketball

In a few years they can do the snowball fight on Cook and the basketball game in a single trip!

Do they still have Miami buses? Maybe the athletic department should highlight that and coordinate time if there has been a big download on tickets. It is also rush week I think. Ugh- not our best timing luck

I’m not saying they can’t. I am just saying that is one reason they might not.

Here are the UMASS game notes, and the starting lineup is as I posted above.

I would hope by now Umass is in Hamilton or Oxford for the game - so it should be a go

Parking will be an adventure. Miami usually pushes snow towards light poles and blocks a lot of parking spaces. Add in students parking their cars and not moving them like they should during a game, it’s gonna be really bad

Are you worried about Tuesdays game or Saturdays. I wouldnt think there would be that many parkers on Tuesday
