Miami Basketball 22-23 Discussion

I had a few semesters where I had no classes Tuesday/Thursday. Just meant my Mon/Wed/Fri were incredibly busy.

Pretty sure that’s more practice time than the other staffs have had scheduled: morning practice, afternoon practice, plus a lift.

I had a few semesters with no Wednesday classes.

And the team had defensive stats to match the lack of emphasis.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again—I believe this will be a better team than we saw last year simply due to a real emphasis on defense.

I had a draft post started where I was going to mention how surprised I was by how blunt he is. It’s kind of refreshing and makes the interviews and press conferences more interesting.

My second semester senior year I had 4 classes on Tuesday and Thursday for 12 credits. Perk of getting ahead early and enjoying the shit out of senior year. I also managed to get my lowest grades that semester.

Not everyone in SLAM

That was my gut reaction, too, but Jive is right.

Took a quick look into more advanced stats for the team now that we’ve played a handful of games. Some observations:

  • Mirambeaux is tearing it up. Some conference rankings for various stats: 12th in ORB%, 2nd in block %, 5th in free throw percentage, 10th in efficiency rating, 3rd in usage percentage, 17th in points produced per game
  • The offense really relies on Mekhi. His points produced per game is 6th in the MAC and his usage % is 11th.
  • Billy Smith is an anomaly as a freshman. 7th in true shooting percentage, 4th in 3 point %, 16th in minutes per game, and 6th in turnover percentage. He plays a lot, makes shots, and doesn’t turn it over.
  • The numbers love Lewis, and it makes sense. I’m excited to have him, Safford, and Williams available at the same time.
  • The numbers really don’t like Mabrey. He started slow, but he seemed to take several steps forward during the Little Rock game. If he plays like that all season, he’d be a very successful freshman.

Note: I trimmed Jackson Kenyon from the list. Only playing 3 minutes really skewed his numbers.

I’m guessing he doesn’t give a rat’s ass.

BTW, Miami is second in the nation in free throw percentage. For a young team, that seems kind of huge.

I hope he doesn’t. I think he played well last game. Half a step behind at times, but can definitely see the progression he’s making game to game. Part of the reason I posted these is we’re just under halfway through the non-conference schedule. I’m curious to see how players progress. Half of our games have been against teams that are right around that top 100 mark with a top 10 team thrown in there. That’s hard for any freshman to get up to speed against.

Billy is not disappointing, since watching him at the intra-squad scrimmage, Lewis is actually showing a bit more than what I came away with from scrimmage, Mabrey sort of what I expected in his first season, based on what I saw…but he’ll figure it out and maybe started to in the last game.

This is a solid problem to have: Safford, Lewis, Smith, Williams, Mabrey, Yofan…as things progress, add Etzler in there at times as well.

I’ll say this, I have much more confidence in Lewis being a part time PG now than at the scrimmage, and still think Tatum/Safford/Yofan can help there when needed.

The wild car to me is what can Harrison add at BF?

One thing that could give us trouble is if we face teams with two to three really quick guards…as we lack that quickness, but Travis should have a trick or two up his sleeves.

The key will be staying healthy here on out…so many other teams have their five to 8 playing at end of season, can we …please?

Well done.

Five guys averaging double digits in points (although one is Safford who’s only played two games).

Great work

Very well done

I think we can go “long” with Lewis, Safford, Smith, and Williams rotating at 2, 3, and 4.

Maybe even play them all at once as long as we commit to rebound and double the post (which we already do).

Doesn’t really matter who starts.

I believe that would bother two quick guards.
